Chapter 1
1.1 Introducing Dialog Axiata PLC
Dialog Axiata PLC operates Sri Lanka’s largest and fastest growing mobile
telecommunications network - Dialog Mobile. Dialog Axiata PLC is a subsidiary of
Axiata Group Berhad (Axiata). Dialog has spearheaded the mobile industry in Sri Lanka
since the late 90’s, propelling it to a level of technology on par with the developed world.
The Company operates 2.5G, 3G ,3.5G & 4G LTE mobile services, supporting the very
latest in multimedia and mobile internet services as well as international roaming across
over 200 countries. Dialog Axiata accounts for more than 25 per cent of Sri Lanka’s
mobile subscribers.
In addition to its core business of mobile telephony, the Company operates a wide
portfolio of international telecommunication services, including but not limited to retail
and wholesale international voice and data services, based on cutting edge International
Gateway Infrastructure. Dialog Global, the international arm of Dialog Telekom, provides
state-of-the-art gateway facilities through partnerships with “Tier-1” international
carriers. Dialog Broadband Networks (Private) Limited (DBN) is a fully owned
subsidiary of the Company and is a key player in Sri Lankans ICT infrastructure sector,
providing backbone and transmission infrastructure facilities and data communication
services. DBN also operates a fixed wireless telephony service based on CDMA
technology. DBN was also the first service provider in Sri Lanka to introduce high-speed
broadband internet services based on WiMAX technology.
Dialog Television (Private) Limited (Dialog TV), a subsidiary of Dialog Telekom PLC,
operates Dialog Satellite TV, a Direct to Home (DTH) Digital Satellite TV service.
Dialog TV supports a broad array of international and local content including CNN, BBC,
HBO, Cinemax, AXN, ESPN, Ten Sports, Discovery Channel , MTV (Music Television)
and Cartoon Network alongside a wide portfolio of Sri Lankan television channels.

1.2 History of Dialog
Dialog was incorporated as a private limited liability company on 27 August 1993 and
converted to a public limited liability company on 26 May 2005. From 1993 it developed
its GSM network centered in Colombo city and start commercial operation at 1995. At
that time Dialog was known as the MTN Networks and its GSM subscriptions were
branded as the “Dialog-GSM”. From its beginning it had an attractive and meaningful
tagline “The Future Today” As an initial network Dialog GSM only covered the crowded
and industrialized areas like Colombo city
1.3 Dialog Services
1.3.1. Dialog Mobile
Being the country’s largest mobile telecommunication service provider with more than
8.7 million subscribers such as prepaid customers - 7,751,113 and postpaid customers –
962,892 with total customer base of 8,714,005 status as at 31st December 2013, it
perceives expenditure for network and high quality of service (QOS) to provide GSM,
GPRS, 3G, EDGE, HSPA+ and 4G LTE networks in Sri Lanka.
Having island wide GSM and 3G coverage respectively with over 2000 and 1000 sites, it
has introduced 4G LTE for high speed internet access, download and upload recently to
the country. Meanwhile it was known as the first mobile service provider to disperse
Jaffna peninsula and East provision in post war period.

1.3.2. Dialog Broadband
In virtue of recognizing Dialog Broadband Network (DBN) as the second largest fixed
telecommunication provider, broadband services are categorized into main 3 sectors such
as Mobile Broadband, Wi Fi and Fixed Broadband. As services DBN serves both
residential and enterprise customers with voice, broadband, lease and various customized
services. Echelon under Fixed Broadband, it provides Wi Max and 4G Fixed LTE
services to become the Sri Lanka’s first fixed 4G LTE operator.
1.3.3. Dialog TV
Dialog Television (Private) Limited (DTV) operates a Direct-to-Home (DTH) Digital
Satellite TV service and is the market leader in Sri Lanka’s Pay TV sector. DTV supports
a broad array of international and local content in both Standard Definition (SD) and High
Definition (HD) formats alongside a wide portfolio of Sri Lankan television channels and
delivers high quality infotainment to a viewer base in excess of 300,000 Sri Lankan
Households.

1.3.4. Dialog SAT
Dialog SAT is a satellite mobile telephony service which can use to fulfill the
communication needs of remote locations and special situations like disasters where
typical GSM coverage is inaccessible. For an example in Northern and Eastern province
of Sri Lanka was at a war situation and Dialog SAT can be used to cater the
communication needs of those areas. Dialog SAT is based on the “THURAYA” satellite
phone solutions. THURAYA provides mobile equipment which can communicate in both
GSM and Satellite networks, and it provides GPS (Global Positioning System) solutions
too.
1.4. Corporate Plan
1.4.1. Vision
Vision is to be the undisputed leader in the provision of multi-sensory connectivity
resulting always, in the empowerment and enrichment of Sri Lankan lives and enterprises.
1.4.2. Mission
To lead in the provision of technology enabled connectivity touching multiple human
sensors and faculties, through committed adherence to customer-driven, responsive and
flexible business processes, and through the delivery of quality service and leading edge
technology unparalleled by any other, spurred by an empowered set of dedicated
individuals who are driven by an irrepressible desire to work as one towards a common
goal in the truest sense of the team spirit.
1.5. Organization Structure
To expedite the objectives such as achieving sustainable growth in management,
confinement, effectiveness, performances, productivity, and to stabilize the financial
backdrop of the company, organization structure is accommodated.

1.6. Key Milestones of Dialog Axiata
Dialog Telekom was incorporated in Sri Lanka under the name of MTN Network
(Private) Limited on 27th August 1993.
Dialog commenced operations in 1995. The company’s postpaid mobile service was
initiated in March 1995 under the “Dialog” brand name.
In 1997, introduction of automatic International Roaming
Short Messaging Service (SMS) was introduced in June 1998.
Introduction of prepaid services in 1999 under the brand name “KIT”
Launch of GPRS (General Packet Radio Service), support High Speed Packet Based
Mobile Data Services in 2001.
The launch of Satellite Mobile Telephony Services under the brand name of Dialog SAT
in 2002.
Introduction of Multi-Media Messaging (MMS) in 2002 placing itself among the first 35
networks in the world to support this break through mobile telecommunications
technology
The introduction of the Dual Band usage of 900MHz and 1800MHz channels in 2003
optimized the spectrum efficiency as well as the Quality of Service.
In 2003 launch Dialog Global, a forerunner in the International Services market.
In 2004, becomes the first operator in South Asia launch a test run in 3G network
In 2006, becomes the first operator in South Asia launch a commercial 3G network
In 2013,becomes the first operator in South Asia launch a commercial 4G-LTE network

1.7 Opportunities For Improvement
According to Telecommunications Regulatory Commission in Sri Lanka (TRCSL) the
statistics and data are followed by status on September 2014.
Total number of fixed phones - 2,711,717
Number of Cellular Mobile Subscribers - 21,727,589
Internet & Email Subscribers (Fixed) - 578,781
Internet & Email Broadband Subscribers (Mobile) - 2,401,686
1.8 Employers
The numbers of employers are changed from division to division. But there are gathering
of permanent employers work in each division.
1.9 Details of EPF, ETF
EPF (Employee Provident Fund).
Main objective of employee’s provident fund (EPF) is to provide social security or protection
to employees at old age invalidity or their dependents after death. EPF = 8% from employee
basic salary + 12% employer.
Advantages of Employee’s Provident Fund (EPF)
1. Provident Fund benefits
2. Employer also contributes to Members PF
3. Member can withdraw from these gatherings to cater to financial exigencies in life -
No need to refund unless misused
4. On resignation, the member can settle the account. i.e., the member gets his PF
contribution, Employer Contribution and Interest.
Employee’s Provident Fund (EPF) can be taken,
1. When the employee is leaving for a job in Government.
2. When the employee is leaving the service on reaching age of retirement.
3. When the employee is migrating to another country on a permanent Visa.
4. When the female employees are leaving the service on grounds of marriage.

ETF (Employee Trust Fund)
The Employees’ Trust Fund is administrated by the Employees. There is a board called,
“Trust Fund Board”. The ETF Board is functioning under the Ministry of Finance. The
provisions of the act shall apply to every state & private sector. ETF = 3% from the basic
(Employer Contribution).
Employees’ Provident Fund [ETF] which requires that a compulsory age to be completed to
claim the funds, members of ETF do not have to wait till they fulfill a specific age to
withdraw their fund.
But, the following facts must be noted,
Termination of employment is necessary if a claim is to be made.
(Reason for termination of employment could be retirement, resignation, dismissal, vacation
of post…etc.)
Employees Trust Fund (ETF)
ETF facility is available in the company.
The Company remits 3% of the gross earnings of their employees to the Fund,
monthly.
Employees Provident Fund (EPF)
EPF facility is available in the company.
The Company contributes a minimum of 8% and the employer a minimum of 12%
of the total salary of the employee monthly.
A member is not entitled to make a claim for withdrawal of fund balance until the lapse of
five years from the date of termination of employment in respect of which a refund has been
made.
Exceptions to this rule are:
Reaching the age of 60 years or migrating for permanent residence.
Termination of employment due to permanent disability or death of a member.
Joining state service which entitles the member to a pension.

1.10 Leaves
Dialog gives 4 types of leaves for their permanent staff .They are,
Annual leaves are 14 days
Casual leaves are 7 days
Medical leaves are 14 days
Maternity leaves are 84 days
Each Poya day is considered as a holiday.
1.11 Welfare activities
In the dialog company there are several welfare activities. as a company or by division to
division they give accommodation for the world cup cricket tournament.in addition it
accommodates for other special activities.
Under the full accommodation of the company they held parties annually or once a three
months.it is a gathering of all employers.
1.12 Using Safety Methods
In Telecommunication Industry, there should be good safety methods and take maximum
actions to the employee’s safety. At the dialog also followed many safety methods to reduce
their risks and injuries.
1. Use safety belts.
2. Use safety helmets & goggles.
3. Use safety shoes.
4. Use safety Clothes & gloves
5. Use proper tool and equipment’s
When an accident happens, we can reduce the damages by knowing the action which should
take relevantly. By giving First Aid to a person who faced to an accident we can prevent
deaths and it is important to get the knowledge always about those things. Fire equipment in
dialog is always used in so many places

Fire Safety
Fire safety is an important factor in the workshop. Fire can be burnt of whole workshops.
Therefore safety with fire is very important. A fire is caused by a combination of the
following factors.
A combustible material
A sufficiently high temperature
Oxygen
Fire equipment in Dialog Axiata PLC is always used in so many places. Such as NOC,
Switch,….etc. Fire equipment are allocated depend on classes of it. It is mainly used gas fire
equipment & the system is operating fully automatic method. To detect the fire, every
important place has fire identifying sensors and smoke detectors. As an example every BTS
cabinet has smoke detector and fire detectors.

1.13 Working Environment
Dialog Axiata PLC which consistently sets standards of service considered to be the
benchmark in the telecommunication industry is keen to get the best people on board. Dialog

  • 1. 1 Chapter 1 1.1 Introducing Dialog Axiata PLC Dialog Axiata PLC operates Sri Lanka’s largest and fastest growing mobile telecommunications network - Dialog Mobile. Dialog Axiata PLC is a subsidiary of Axiata Group Berhad (Axiata). Dialog has spearheaded the mobile industry in Sri Lanka since the late 90’s, propelling it to a level of technology on par with the developed world. The Company operates 2.5G, 3G ,3.5G & 4G LTE mobile services, supporting the very latest in multimedia and mobile internet services as well as international roaming across over 200 countries. Dialog Axiata accounts for more than 25 per cent of Sri Lanka’s mobile subscribers. In addition to its core business of mobile telephony, the Company operates a wide portfolio of international telecommunication services, including but not limited to retail and wholesale international voice and data services, based on cutting edge International Gateway Infrastructure. Dialog Global, the international arm of Dialog Telekom, provides state-of-the-art gateway facilities through partnerships with “Tier-1” international carriers. Dialog Broadband Networks (Private) Limited (DBN) is a fully owned subsidiary of the Company and is a key player in Sri Lankans ICT infrastructure sector, providing backbone and transmission infrastructure facilities and data communication services. DBN also operates a fixed wireless telephony service based on CDMA technology. DBN was also the first service provider in Sri Lanka to introduce high-speed broadband internet services based on WiMAX technology. Dialog Television (Private) Limited (Dialog TV), a subsidiary of Dialog Telekom PLC, operates Dialog Satellite TV, a Direct to Home (DTH) Digital Satellite TV service. Dialog TV supports a broad array of international and local content including CNN, BBC, HBO, Cinemax, AXN, ESPN, Ten Sports, Discovery Channel , MTV (Music Television) and Cartoon Network alongside a wide portfolio of Sri Lankan television channels.
  • 2. 2 1.2 History of Dialog Dialog was incorporated as a private limited liability company on 27 August 1993 and converted to a public limited liability company on 26 May 2005. From 1993 it developed its GSM network centered in Colombo city and start commercial operation at 1995. At that time Dialog was known as the MTN Networks and its GSM subscriptions were branded as the “Dialog-GSM”. From its beginning it had an attractive and meaningful tagline “The Future Today” As an initial network Dialog GSM only covered the crowded and industrialized areas like Colombo city 1.3 Dialog Services 1.3.1. Dialog Mobile Being the country’s largest mobile telecommunication service provider with more than 8.7 million subscribers such as prepaid customers - 7,751,113 and postpaid customers – 962,892 with total customer base of 8,714,005 status as at 31st December 2013, it perceives expenditure for network and high quality of service (QOS) to provide GSM, GPRS, 3G, EDGE, HSPA+ and 4G LTE networks in Sri Lanka. Having island wide GSM and 3G coverage respectively with over 2000 and 1000 sites, it has introduced 4G LTE for high speed internet access, download and upload recently to the country. Dialog Broadband In virtue of recognizing Dialog Broadband Network (DBN) as the second largest fixed telecommunication provider, broadband services are categorized into main 3 sectors such as Mobile Broadband, Wi Fi and Fixed Broadband. As services DBN serves both residential and enterprise customers with voice, broadband, lease and various customized services. Echelon under Fixed Broadband, it provides Wi Max and 4G Fixed LTE services to become the Sri Lanka’s first fixed 4G LTE operator. 1.3.3. Dialog TV Dialog Television (Private) Limited (DTV) operates a Direct-to-Home (DTH) Digital Satellite TV service and is the market leader in Sri Lanka’s Pay TV sector. DTV supports a broad array of international and local content in both Standard Definition (SD) and High Definition (HD) formats alongside a wide portfolio of Sri Lankan television channels and delivers high quality infotainment to a viewer base in excess of 300,000 Sri Lankan Households. Dialog SAT Dialog SAT is a satellite mobile telephony service which can use to fulfill the communication needs of remote locations and special situations like disasters where typical GSM coverage is inaccessible. For an example in Northern and Eastern province of Sri Lanka was at a war situation and Dialog SAT can be used to cater the communication needs of those areas. Dialog SAT is based on the “THURAYA” satellite phone solutions. THURAYA provides mobile equipment which can communicate in both GSM and Satellite networks, and it provides GPS (Global Positioning System) solutions too. 1.4. Corporate Plan 1.4.1. Vision Vision is to be the undisputed leader in the provision of multi-sensory connectivity resulting always, in the empowerment and enrichment of Sri Lankan lives and enterprises. 1.4.2. Mission To lead in the provision of technology enabled connectivity touching multiple human sensors and faculties, through committed adherence to customer-driven, responsive and flexible business processes, and through the delivery of quality service and leading edge technology unparalleled by any other, spurred by an empowered set of dedicated individuals who are driven by an irrepressible desire to work as one towards a common goal in the truest sense of the team spirit. 1.5. Organization Structure To expedite the objectives such as achieving sustainable growth in management, confinement, effectiveness, performances, productivity, and to stabilize the financial backdrop of the company, organization structure is accommodated.
  • 6. 6 1.6. Key Milestones of Dialog Axiata Dialog Telekom was incorporated in Sri Lanka under the name of MTN Network (Private) Limited on 27th August 1993. Dialog commenced operations in 1995. The company’s postpaid mobile service was initiated in March 1995 under the “Dialog” brand name. In 1997, introduction of automatic International Roaming Short Messaging Service (SMS) was introduced in June 1998. Introduction of prepaid services in 1999 under the brand name “KIT” Launch of GPRS (General Packet Radio Service), support High Speed Packet Based Mobile Data Services in 2001. The launch of Satellite Mobile Telephony Services under the brand name of Dialog SAT in 2002. Introduction of Multi-Media Messaging (MMS) in 2002 placing itself among the first 35 networks in the world to support this break through mobile telecommunications technology The introduction of the Dual Band usage of 900MHz and 1800MHz channels in 2003 optimized the spectrum efficiency as well as the Quality of Service. In 2003 launch Dialog Global, a forerunner in the International Services market. In 2004, becomes the first operator in South Asia launch a test run in 3G network In 2006, becomes the first operator in South Asia launch a commercial 3G network In 2013,becomes the first operator in South Asia launch a commercial 4G-LTE network Figure 1.5: Company logo
  • 7. 7 1.7 Opportunities For Improvement According to Telecommunications Regulatory Commission in Sri Lanka (TRCSL) the statistics and data are followed by status on September 2014. Total number of fixed phones - 2,711,717 Number of Cellular Mobile Subscribers - 21,727,589 Internet & Email Subscribers (Fixed) - 578,781 Internet & Email Broadband Subscribers (Mobile) - 2,401,686 1.8 Employers The numbers of employers are changed from division to division. But there are gathering of permanent employers work in each division. 1.9 Details of EPF, ETF EPF (Employee Provident Fund). Main objective of employee’s provident fund (EPF) is to provide social security or protection to employees at old age invalidity or their dependents after death. EPF = 8% from employee basic salary + 12% employer. Advantages of Employee’s Provident Fund (EPF) 1. Provident Fund benefits 2. Employer also contributes to Members PF 3. Member can withdraw from these gatherings to cater to financial exigencies in life - No need to refund unless misused 4. On resignation, the member can settle the account. i.e., the member gets his PF contribution, Employer Contribution and Interest. Employee’s Provident Fund (EPF) can be taken, 1. When the employee is leaving for a job in Government. 2. When the employee is leaving the service on reaching age of retirement. 3. When the employee is migrating to another country on a permanent Visa. 4. When the female employees are leaving the service on grounds of marriage.
  • 8. 8 ETF (Employee Trust Fund) The Employees’ Trust Fund is administrated by the Employees. There is a board called, “Trust Fund Board”. The ETF Board is functioning under the Ministry of Finance. The provisions of the act shall apply to every state & private sector. ETF = 3% from the basic (Employer Contribution). Employees’ Provident Fund [ETF] which requires that a compulsory age to be completed to claim the funds, members of ETF do not have to wait till they fulfill a specific age to withdraw their fund. But, the following facts must be noted, Termination of employment is necessary if a claim is to be made. (Reason for termination of employment could be retirement, resignation, dismissal, vacation of post…etc.) Employees Trust Fund (ETF) ETF facility is available in the company. The Company remits 3% of the gross earnings of their employees to the Fund, monthly. Employees Provident Fund (EPF) EPF facility is available in the company. The Company contributes a minimum of 8% and the employer a minimum of 12% of the total salary of the employee monthly. A member is not entitled to make a claim for withdrawal of fund balance until the lapse of five years from the date of termination of employment in respect of which a refund has been made. Exceptions to this rule are: Reaching the age of 60 years or migrating for permanent residence. Termination of employment due to permanent disability or death of a member. Joining state service which entitles the member to a pension.
  • 9. 9 1.10 Leaves Dialog gives 4 types of leaves for their permanent staff .They are, Annual leaves are 14 days Casual leaves are 7 days Medical leaves are 14 days Maternity leaves are 84 days Each Poya day is considered as a holiday. 1.11 Welfare activities In the dialog company there are several welfare activities. as a company or by division to division they give accommodation for the world cup cricket tournament.in addition it accommodates for other special activities. Under the full accommodation of the company they held parties annually or once a three months.it is a gathering of all employers. 1.12 Using Safety Methods In Telecommunication Industry, there should be good safety methods and take maximum actions to the employee’s safety. At the dialog also followed many safety methods to reduce their risks and injuries. 1. Use safety belts. 2. Use safety helmets & goggles. 3. Use safety shoes. 4. Use safety Clothes & gloves 5. Use proper tool and equipment’s When an accident happens, we can reduce the damages by knowing the action which should take relevantly. By giving First Aid to a person who faced to an accident we can prevent deaths and it is important to get the knowledge always about those things. Fire equipment in dialog is always used in so many places
  • 10. 10 Fire Safety Fire safety is an important factor in the workshop. Fire can be burnt of whole workshops. Therefore safety with fire is very important. A fire is caused by a combination of the following factors. A combustible material A sufficiently high temperature Oxygen Fire equipment in Dialog Axiata PLC is always used in so many places. Such as NOC, Switch,….etc. Fire equipment are allocated depend on classes of it. It is mainly used gas fire equipment & the system is operating fully automatic method. To detect the fire, every important place has fire identifying sensors and smoke detectors. As an example every BTS cabinet has smoke detector and fire detectors.
