1. Designing Human-Computer Interaction
Tutorial Notes
Week 4: Tutorial: Formteams, start workon HCI Design
How to preparefor the tutorial
Please read Assignment 2 and the marking criteria. It is not meant to be easy. It will take
considerable thought and planning. You will need to plan out your work over the next six weeks to
make sure that all parts are completed well.
Consider the means for establishing the context for HCI (rich pictures, activities, scenarios ...)
What to bring:
Bring notes from your preparation & questions or clarification on the assignment.
What to do:
Form teams of 3.
As a team, analyze the following case to identify the different kinds of interactions and
possibilities.
What to think about afterwards:
How might my team use these techniques in assignment 2?
CASE: Your client has hired you to design a new music system that is able to detect people’s
routines and play music accordingly. Your client is a music company who represents young and
emerging musicians in the Asia Pacific region, increase sales of music, increase awareness of their
musicians and their recordings, and capitalize on emerging opportunities with the Internet of
Things.
Use the persona below to generate design ideas for how this application would work for a potential
customer of the service, based on the devices she currently owns.
Your Persona
Cassie is a 36yo nurse that works in a hospital emergency room at Canberra Hospital. She lives in a
three bedroom house, where she takes care of her 5yo daughter and their cat. Joanna’s needs
around music enjoyment include making sure the music she plays at home is kid-safe, discovering
new high-energy songs for when she exercises and staying awake on the drive home.
A day in Cassie’s life includes:
- Running for 30 minutes before work, outdoors or at the gym
- Commuting 40 minutes each way to and from the hospital for her shift
2. - Cooking dinner for herself and her daughter (and a little dancing too)
- Singing while she’s in the shower.
Cassie’s devices include:
- Smartphone
- Tablet
- Laptop
- Fitness Band
- Car
- Smart TV
- Thermostat
- Portable (Bluetooth) speakers
- Wireless headset
(Can you think of any others?)
(a) Create a Rich Picture in which you include the stakeholders and the Ecosystem for Cassie’s
Internet of Things:
a. the devices
b. the services
c. the sensors
d. the people and their relationships
Clearly identify which of the activities will be automated.
(b) Create some new Behaviour’s for the interactions:
Identify the primary device for Cassie in controlling her music-listening experience.
How does Cassie communicate wither Primary Device?
What data can Cassie’s primary device pass to her other devices?
How might a secondary device use data from the primary device?
(c ) Using one of the new behaviours identified in (b), create a storyboard that shows Cassie’s
experience.
