Theseus ship is put into a dry dock. Bit by
bit, each part of it is replaced. As one old
board is torn out, a new one is put in.
Eventually, the work is complete, and the
ship sets together again, and this ship too
goes to sea. So, which of these two
vessels is the real ship of Theseus?
/ The one made from the original material,
you might say. But that’s not what Theseus
thinks: he believes his ship has been
renovated, not replaced. Nor is it the case
that we always think that ownership is a
matter of a particular physical thing; when
Paddington bear went to the bank to
withdrawwithdraw five pounds and reported, stunned,
that the note he was given was not his one,
he misunderstood the nature of money. This
problem set by Thomas Hobbes, might seen
very abstract, but consider for a moment
that every cell in your body changes over
time. So, are people particular lumps of
matter, matter, or a continuous way of organising
matter that is always changing? Are we like
banknotes, or monetary value?
Poole Harbour Market
ShipsShips at sea are the best example of
hybrid living. They include facilities for
people to work rest and socialise. With
hundreds of boats sat in cradles, in an
around Poole Quay, inspired a building
concept; to design a hybrid building
that combines living quarters, work area
andand area for pleasure within one
structure. The vessel itself will harbour
residential facilities, and pleasure
facilities. The area below the structure
hosts a Public market.

Poole Quay
PPoole's natural harbour once
used to be a thriving import and
export port used by the local.
This brought income and good
into the town for the town's
people.
Present
Currently, the harbour is used
as a tourist destination and
the Quay itself has moved on
to cater for the pleasure
boating industry.
Future
The site hosts a market place
that is directly influence by
trade culture that Poole once
had.
The aspiration for the building
is to establish a new market
place what the trade culture
can be reintegrated into the
town.
Elevation_Front
Elevating can be views from the Harbour front. The building is cladded in cedar cladding for
the majority of the building’s facade.
Long_Section
Section_long
The section shows the central atrium that floods the market below with light.
The section also illustraits the change of height from one side of the building to the toher. This
is the result of design. Using a spiral ramp to conect the levels, one can access the roof or
other levels by simply following the route from the ground floor to the roof.

The ARC
TheThe arc, is a Creative and cultural market place
located on Poole Quay, Dorset. The site is located in
the old town of Poole. It contains recreational
facilities such as an auditoria, artist studios, gallery
spaces and pleasure gardens. The building also
contains residential accommodation; making the Arc
a Hybrid living vessel.
TheThe building is inspired by the metaphor found in the
philosophy. Similar to Theseus' Ship, Poole harbour has
changed its use and purpose and adapted the town
to meet the needs of a new generation. As time has
progressed, buildings have been renovated after
devastating events took place in the town a few
decades ago; such as the war.

Concept
II have interpreted Poole map in the style of
Kandinsky to highlight Poole’s key context
using a combination of colours and
geometrical forms to create this composition.
The use of thick back lines show movement
from key locations in Poole. The linear lines
used for poole harbour represents a working
enenvironment. The circular forms represent area
with high volumes of people. Colours used in
the composition interpret the mood and
atmosphere of the area.

Concrete
TheThe building is built using colour died concrete, this
allows the design to be moulded and shaped to
the form of the design. The rendered concrete
interprets the concept of Kandinsky inspired design;
it indicated the different areas of the buildings and
makes it a prominent figure in to the grey context of
Poole.
TheThere are a large number of uprights within the
urban context of Poole. This can be extracted as a
part of Poole Urban context to influence the design.

Concept
TheThe initial form and concept design for the music
school have been challenged along the design
development stages. Using inspiration from
Kandinsky, I have created a new technique of
mapping out the town. The abstract painting,
created at the beginning of the unit, was the main
drive for the this Project. It leads me to explore
PoolePoole in detail, Picking out materials, colours and
spaces found in the town. Influences I gained from
the urban context have been applied to the
design through the use of materials found in Poole.
Concrete is a the main material used in the design
which reflects the urban context of Poole. Poole
Harbour influence other parts of the building which
are used at work spaces for students and teachers.
Exterior spaces are also designed around the
sstudy of Poole. Poole park has played a major part to
the design of the external landscape. The stepped
seating area creates a social and relaxing space for
the public.

Problem_Dissertation Extract
AsAs Architects, we provide more than just a
service; we provide a cultural production. We
are artists. In our own expression we predict
and portray the future of our town and cities
and make them human; to where architecture is
a contribution to social culture. For one to
predict the futures of towns and cities, the past
isis a significant reflection of development the
town has endured through the changes in
social and economic migration.
This historical development of the town of Poole
regards cultural heritage. By understanding the
changes the town had gone through, in the
past century, it shows the social structure it has
arrived to at present day. The effects of social
and economical migration can transform a
town in to a city; the main focus of the essay will
bebe analysing the quality of open public spaces
through the intervention of emerging
architecture. And outline a possible future
scenario determined by population growth.
TheThe study will also be looking further into the
development of transport systems and
technology, find out how they have affected the
quality of public spaces. One can read
patterns of change in the town development
and hypothesise the potential future for public
spaces.
ThThrough the 19th century, professions such as
art and Architecture have been reading
patterns in their respective times to perceive a
future in their vision. Avant-gardes associated
withwith the Situationist International, saw the future
a lot differently from what it is today. All
participating practices involved with future
scenarios have outlined problems with motor
vehicles and transport systems; since they were
iinvented, they were beginning to progress and
slowly but surely invade the urban environment.
In these circumstances, urbanist’s and designers
strived to successful impose their visions of the
future in growing towns and cities.

Proposal
TheThe first step for the future proposal is to
remove the dolphin centre and relocate
transport links. This sets aside a large open
area where new developments can take place.
Therefore, the Life span of the building can be
increased by allowing the space around the
building to be a living space; ensuring that the
space is aspace is always being used in the future.
[1] The research and critical analysis of public
buildings lead the design of the music to
create a whim of porosity through building, to
allow direct access from one point of interest to
the other. This liner gesture lends itself to further
possibility for the future urbanism of Poole. The
notion of slicing through the building presents
an architecture that creates permeability to let
one perceive his destination from a distance,
only to find point of interest along the journey
there.
[2][2] Is a conceptual image which shows the
proposal for a new town centre Poole. The blue
mass represents built masses. The small
granulated pieces represent people and how
they move through the space.

Resolution
TheThe new publicised area can be a host to new
residential blocks to house migrating/increasing
population, making the area a living public
space. This should allow a large number of
people to live, work, socialise in one location, at
the same time, allowing clear routes to
destinations (points of interest and everyday
facilities)facilities) that people can travel to within
walking distance. These new residential
buildings can be portrayed in the form of
residential blocks. These blocks will have clear
incisions through the architecture to display the
new clear routes to and from the centre.
Final Model_1:1250
Plywood,
Grey Card
Dyed Concrete
Effectively, the new area will provide more direct
routes through the town, opening opportunities
for people to explore more of Poole.
TheThe use of integrated architecture will provide
better solutions for over population. It is an
issue that can be utilised to create better
public spaces. The new cultural hub
demonstrates this through its careful planned
design. The skylines of Poole can change;
because the only sure thing is change. But with
changchange, we must adapt to the situation at
hand, and the first step is giving space back to
the people.

One can read patterns of change in the town development and hypothesise the potential future for public spaces. ThThrough the 19th century, professions such as art and Architecture have been reading patterns in their respective times to perceive a future in their vision. Avant-gardes associated withwith the Situationist International, saw the future a lot differently from what it is today. All participating practices involved with future scenarios have outlined problems with motor vehicles and transport systems; since they were iinvented, they were beginning to progress and slowly but surely invade the urban environment. In these circumstances, urbanist’s and designers strived to successful impose their visions of the future in growing towns and cities.

This sets aside a large open area where new developments can take place. Therefore, the Life span of the building can be increased by allowing the space around the building to be a living space; ensuring that the space is aspace is always being used in the future. [1] The research and critical analysis of public buildings lead the design of the music to create a whim of porosity through building, to allow direct access from one point of interest to the other. This liner gesture lends itself to further possibility for the future urbanism of Poole. The notion of slicing through the building presents an architecture that creates permeability to let one perceive his destination from a distance, only to find point of interest along the journey there. This should allow a large number of people to live, work, socialise in one location, at the same time, allowing clear routes to destinations (points of interest and everyday facilities)facilities) that people can travel to within walking distance. These new residential buildings can be portrayed in the form of residential blocks. These blocks will have clear incisions through the architecture to display the new clear routes to and from the centre. Final Model_1:1250 Plywood, Grey Card Dyed Concrete Effectively, the new area will provide more direct routes through the town, opening opportunities for people to explore more of Poole. TheThe use of integrated architecture will provide better solutions for over population. It is an issue that can be utilised to create better public spaces. The new cultural hub demonstrates this through its careful planned design. The skylines of Poole can change; because the only sure thing is change. But with changchange, we must adapt to the situation at hand, and the first step is giving space back to the people.
