The old shipyard holds a unique potential for developing new urban spaces. At the same time,
it is crucial for masterplan development to introduce people and social activities to the site
from the very beginning in order to support growth for future construction. In other words;
to think of people before spaces and spaces before buildings.
In order to meet this knowledge, we propose to preserve and make use of key
existing buildings and structures on-site and investigate profits for re-investment.
Using the shipyard buildings as the face of new public life is the key to feasibility and overall
sucess of Young City.
In order to make Young City an accessible desitination for the citizens and tourists of Gdansk
it is essential to plan for special activities that attract people to the area. Furthermore, it is
crucial to create strong connections to Young City from Gdank’s city centre and central station.
Finally, social inclusion must be maximised on the site.
In order to achieve these qualities we propse the Plaza, the Dock and the Park as key inclusive
urban spaces. The three spatial programmes are connected by an urban spine connecting
parts of Young City and integrating it to the city centre of Gdansk.
In order to respect and reinforce the qualities of the existing buildings, we keep and preserve
as many of the existing buildings and structures as possible in the Young City development.
This approach also addresses aspects of social and environmental sustainability.
Integratedamongtheindustrialculturalheritage,weintroducethreenewbuildingtypologies.
Apart of urban morphology, they are offering diversified types of communities, from local
courtyard neighborhood, to more alternative ways of living in vertical comminities.
In the shipyard area, new housing typologies are integrated among the culturally historical
structures by interpreting the hall typology of shipyard architecture and Old Town city block.
These are kept in a dense, and relative small scale in respect to the existing buildings, which
are seen as the key value of the entire area.

Scenarios in case of market change or extended list of protected elements
Scenario 1 - minimal intervention
Scenario 2 - protecting harbourline
Massing and density where list of protected buildings is extended. To keep the number close to 400.000 GFA is to use the left space
on plot B5 and add one floor to tall buildings.
In this scenario the list is extended by slipways. Without losing area we can achieve that by moving towers on the East edge of the plot
instead of proposed dock.
