Freud’s 5
stages of
psychosexual
development
“
How does
personality
develop???
3
He believed that personality
developed through a series
of childhood stages in which
the pleasure seeking
energies of the ID become
focused on certain
erogenous zones.
According to
SIGMUND FREUD,
children go through a
series of psychosexual
stages that’ lead to
the development of
the adult personality
4
EROGENOUS ZONE:
it is an area of the body that is
sensitive to stimulation.
Each stages of
development is marked
by conflicts that can
help build growth and
development.
Psychosexual stages:
Completed successfully=heathy
personality
Issues are not resolved=fixation
Erogenous zone-a
specific area that
becomes the focus of
pleasure.
Fixation- results from failure
to satisfy the needs of a
particular psychosexual stage.

STAGE
LATENCY
STAGE
GENITAL
STAGE
ORAL STAGE:
➜ Erogenous zone: ”mouth”
➜ The mouth is vital for eating, and the infant
derives pleasure from oral stimulation through
activities such as sucking and tasting.
➜ The infant is entirely dependent upon
parents/caretakers, the child also develops a
sense of trust and comfort through this oral
stimulation.
8
Age
range:
birth to 1
year
ORAL STAGE:
9
The primarily conflict at this stage is
that the child must become less
dependent upon parent/caretakers.
If FIXATION occur can lead to issues
with aggression or dependency.
Oral fixation= PROBLEMS (DRINGKING,
EATING, SMOKING, SUCKING THUMB OR
NAIL BITTING).
AGE RANGE: 1 TO
3 YEARS
EROGENOUS ZONE:
“ANUS and BLADDER”
ANAL STAGE:
The primary focus
of the pleasure was
on controlling
bladder and bowel
movement through
toilet training.
10
the success of this stage is
dependent on how the parent/
caretaker approach toilet
training. Parents who praise
and give rewards for using
the toilet properly
encourage positive outcomes
and help children feel
capable and productive.
ANAL STAGE:
Inappropriate parental
responses such as punishing
and shaming a child for
accidents can result in
negative outcomes.
*too lenient=“ANAL-
EXPULSIVE PERSONALITY”
(messy, wasteful or
destructive personality).
*too early=“ANAL-RETENTIVE
PERSONALITY” (orderly,
obsessive, stringent)
11
PHALLIC STAGE:
Erogenous zone: “GENETALS”
Age range: 3 to 6 years
12
The primary of pleasure is in
genitals. At this stage children
begins to know the difference
between males and females.
OEDIPUS
COMPLEX:
Boys develop
unconscious sexual
desire for their
mother.
PHALLIC STAGE:
ELECTRA
COMPLEX:
Girls develop
unconscious sexual
attraction
towards their
father.
13
PHALLIC STAGE:
14
Castration anxiety- it is a boy’s
fear of loss or damage to the
genital organ as punishment for
their affection towards their
mother.
A fixation on this stage could result in sexual
deviancies (overindulging and avoidance), and a
weak or confused sexual identity.
15
LATENT PERIOD:
Age range: 6 years to puberty
Erogenous zone: sexual feelings are inactive
During this stage the sexual urges remain
repressed. The children’s focus the
acquisition of physical and academic skills.
Boys relates to boys
Girls will relate to girls
16
LATENT PERIOD:
Freud believed that if children are
stuck or fixated in this phase it can
result in immaturity and an inability
to form fulfilling relationships as an
adult.
Completed successfully it can develop social
and communication skills and self
confidence.
GENITAL STAGE:
Age range: puberty to death
Erogenous zone: maturing sexual interest
The onset of puberty causes the libido to
become active again.
The goal of this stage is to
establish a balance between
the various life areas.
