Physically handicapped persons can have congenital or acquired impairments that limit movement, sensation, coordination or speech. These handicaps are often associated with emotional and psychosocial problems of varying severity. Physically handicapped conditions include orthopedic, visual, neurological, speech/hearing, cardiovascular impairments as well as disfigurements from infections, burns or injuries. Common psychological reactions to physical handicaps include negative emotions, personality traits like shyness or dependence, and psychiatric issues like paranoia or adjustment disorders. Nurses play an important role in educating the physically handicapped to develop self-care abilities, provide knowledge to make informed decisions, build necessary skills, strengthen them emotionally, and give confidence to face challenges
