Developing digital capabilities for staff and students - Northern Collaboration 2017 Conference

Editor's Notes

  • #2 This presentation provides an overview of how our University Library is reviewing its digital capabilities, in line with JISC work, to provide a proactive approach to developing digital capabilities for staff and students.
  • #3 JISC used the analogy of the new NERC polar research ship to highlight the importance of being digitally capable. Did the Natural Environment Research Council’s (NERC) competition to name their new polar research ship misunderstand the power of social media? Did they do it deliberately to promote awareness or were they caught out? At Hull, we are addressing the digital world by helping students understand and apply their digital capabilities more effectively.
  • #4 JISC have produced a digital capabilities discovery tool where people can self-evaluate their own understanding and approach to digital capability skills around the key themes outlined in their digital capability framework. Respondents are emailed a copy of their report and can access customised resources which provide information and pointers about how further develop their knowledge and skills.
  • #5 Building on our previous work for identifying and developing digital literacy skills we are currently working on reviewing our digital capability skills. By analysing the staff data from the discovery tool we have been able to draw out key strengths and areas for development. We are also working with students to identify their own digital capabilities and how this matches with our current support.
  • #6 By identifying the current strengths and confidence of our staff and students with their own digital capabilities we can compare that to the JISC profiles for staff and the learner profile for students. This mapping exercise is currently under way and will help us draw out what we currently provide to promote and develop digital capabilities and what additional support is needed.
  • #7 Having identified what the current level of digital capabilities are for staff and students in relation to the JISC profiles, we can then plan and promote new learning and support opportunities for Library staff and the students we support.
  • #8 Undertaking our current work on digital capabilities is helping staff in the first instance, to recognise their current level of skills and confidence. By taking a holistic approach across the Library we are able to recognise opportunities for support and development for all staff in a collegiate, supportive environment. This in turn, increases staff confidence in helping our students and to highlight the importance to students of developing their own digital capabilities.
  • #9 Alongside the work being undertaken in the Library, we are working closely with our colleagues from Learning Enhancement and Staff Development to promote the digital capabilities agenda across the whole University. The University has supported the creation of a University-wide digital capabilities team to consider our understanding of digital capabilities and in the first phase will be delivering a local version of the JISC discovery tool. By doing so, we will be gathering large scale data and also raise initial awareness of the benefits that greater digital capabilities can bring to an organisation.
