Detailed Plot Analysis
This is the detailed plot analysis of my music video for the song Castle by Ashley Nicolette
Frangipane, also known as Halsey. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rfSHisyHdc)
My videoisintendedtobe a visual studyandexplorationof power,wealthandcorruption.The plot
followsayoung,benevolentprincesswhowantstoreclaimpowerof herhome kingdomfroma
tyrannical prince’sfamily.
She isseen,inthe beginningtobe pure and peaceful whichmakesitall the more jarringwhenher
character changesdue to corruptionbynewlyfoundpower. The beginningof myfilmopenswith
watchingthe princessweavingethereallyaroundawoodland.She lookslike she isfloating,
spiritually connectedwithnature and the worldaroundher.She isintendedtobe a “Snow White”
type character. Asshe is undertakinganepicquestandrequiresbravery,she isseentocrossherself
inprayer.
Next,she isseentowalkintoa clearingwhichis deckedoutto looklike acastle.There are decadent
paintingsandjewelsaroundthe clearinganda throne inthe centre.Sat onthe throne isa young
prince,sathaphazardlyonthe throne witha smirk.He isshownto be cocky and arrogant,withhis
crown jauntilyonhisheadalongwithacloak anda throne. Leadinguptoseeinghim, the princess
naïvelybelievedthatshe was justgoingto be able to walkina take the throne and as a resultthe
kingdom’spower. Atthispoint,she is regardedas a pacifistanddoesnotwantto fightthe prince for
hisplace,butalso she isconflictedbecause she desperatelywants toreign.Thisisthe firstinklingof
the conflictinthe princess’sheartbetweenpeace andpower.
The prince’ssadisticsmirk afterseeingherdreamsshattercausessomethingtosnapinside the
princess.Toher left,she seesapricelesstiara.Realisingthatisshe cannottake the throne and
acceptingthe fact that she will neverbe able tofree the kingdom fromhistyrannyasshe isbehaving
now,the princess decidesthatshe will steal anddestroy a crown,evenif it’snotthecrown.She
doesn’twantto wearit,but insteaddestroyit. She bringsittoher face to snapit intwo,hopingto
findcatharsisinthe vandalism.Thisactcausesa dramaticand visceral visible change inthe prince’s
composure,causinghimtospringup and sprinttowardsthe princesstoprotectthe tiara from any
harm. He runs, arms outstretchedwildly,tryingtograspthe tiara butthe princessdestroysita
secondbefore the prince can reclaimitfromher.The thinly-veileddesperationonthe prince’sface
and the satisfactionof destroyingsomethingmuchlovedbythe familyshe sohated caused
adrenaline to invade herbloodstream. Thisviolence,the veryactthe princesscommitto show her
resignationfrompowercauseshertogainit andonlyfurthershercorruption bythe temptationof
wealthandidolisation.Inasuddenburstof aggressionanddefiance farremovedfromheroriginal
personalityshe reachesoutto grabthe prince’sarmto force himto the ground,twistinghisarm,
renderinghimimmobilefromthe pain.She isphysicallyputtingthe prince below herwhichreverses
the rolestheyhave livedinforsolong.
The princess,completelyjadedanddissociatedfromherformerself, thencontinuesto further
disgrace the prince,whoisstill collapsedonthe ground.She doesthisatfirstbystealingall hisroyal
garb. She beginsmethodically,startingwithhiscape.She movesonthentohisrings, hisjewels and
snatcheshiscane from hishands. The princess finallyandceremoniouslyliftshiscrownfromhis
head,turningawayfromhim.Defiantly,she walksdownthe lengthof the room/clearingtothe
throne while swingingthe crown limply byherside asthe prince can onlywatch.He looksweaker
now,lesssmug.He lookspositivelycrumpledandhopeless.
The princess,nolongerhumble andnolongerbenevolent,makesashow of sittinguponthe throne
withthe same air of arrogance and self-satisfactionthe prince hadatthe start. She lowersherself
intosittingpainfullyslowly,eachmuscle movementapersonal,vindictiveattackonthe prince.
Finally,once she positionsherself.She raisesthe crowntoface-level,justlike she didwiththe tiara.
Thistime,she carrieson raisingitand donsiton her head.She glaresatthe prince onthe floor.
Sittingonhisthrone,inhisclothes,inhiscrownshe has beenfull corruptedbyherlatentdesire for
powerandthe pair’sdynamichascompletelyswitched.

  • 1. Detailed Plot Analysis This is the detailed plot analysis of my music video for the song Castle by Ashley Nicolette Frangipane, also known as Halsey. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rfSHisyHdc) My videoisintendedtobe a visual studyandexplorationof power,wealthandcorruption.The plot followsayoung,benevolentprincesswhowantstoreclaimpowerof herhome kingdomfroma tyrannical prince’sfamily. She isseen,inthe beginningtobe pure and peaceful whichmakesitall the more jarringwhenher character changesdue to corruptionbynewlyfoundpower. The beginningof myfilmopenswith watchingthe princessweavingethereallyaroundawoodland.She lookslike she isfloating, spiritually connectedwithnature and the worldaroundher.She isintendedtobe a “Snow White” type character. Asshe is undertakinganepicquestandrequiresbravery,she isseentocrossherself inprayer. Next,she isseentowalkintoa clearingwhichis deckedoutto looklike acastle.There are decadent paintingsandjewelsaroundthe clearinganda throne inthe centre.Sat onthe throne isa young prince,sathaphazardlyonthe throne witha smirk.He isshownto be cocky and arrogant,withhis crown jauntilyonhisheadalongwithacloak anda throne. Leadinguptoseeinghim, the princess naïvelybelievedthatshe was justgoingto be able to walkina take the throne and as a resultthe kingdom’spower. Atthispoint,she is regardedas a pacifistanddoesnotwantto fightthe prince for hisplace,butalso she isconflictedbecause she desperatelywants toreign.Thisisthe firstinklingof the conflictinthe princess’sheartbetweenpeace andpower. The prince’ssadisticsmirk afterseeingherdreamsshattercausessomethingtosnapinside the princess.Toher left,she seesapricelesstiara.Realisingthatisshe cannottake the throne and acceptingthe fact that she will neverbe able tofree the kingdom fromhistyrannyasshe isbehaving now,the princess decidesthatshe will steal anddestroy a crown,evenif it’snotthecrown.She doesn’twantto wearit,but insteaddestroyit. She bringsittoher face to snapit intwo,hopingto findcatharsisinthe vandalism.Thisactcausesa dramaticand visceral visible change inthe prince’s composure,causinghimtospringup and sprinttowardsthe princesstoprotectthe tiara from any harm. He runs, arms outstretchedwildly,tryingtograspthe tiara butthe princessdestroysita secondbefore the prince can reclaimitfromher.The thinly-veileddesperationonthe prince’sface and the satisfactionof destroyingsomethingmuchlovedbythe familyshe sohated caused adrenaline to invade herbloodstream. Thisviolence,the veryactthe princesscommitto show her resignationfrompowercauseshertogainit andonlyfurthershercorruption bythe temptationof wealthandidolisation.Inasuddenburstof aggressionanddefiance farremovedfromheroriginal personalityshe reachesoutto grabthe prince’sarmto force himto the ground,twistinghisarm, renderinghimimmobilefromthe pain.She isphysicallyputtingthe prince below herwhichreverses the rolestheyhave livedinforsolong. The princess,completelyjadedanddissociatedfromherformerself, thencontinuesto further disgrace the prince,whoisstill collapsedonthe ground.She doesthisatfirstbystealingall hisroyal garb. She beginsmethodically,startingwithhiscape.She movesonthentohisrings, hisjewels and snatcheshiscane from hishands. The princess finallyandceremoniouslyliftshiscrownfromhis head,turningawayfromhim.Defiantly,she walksdownthe lengthof the room/clearingtothe
  • 2. throne while swingingthe crown limply byherside asthe prince can onlywatch.He looksweaker now,lesssmug.He lookspositivelycrumpledandhopeless. The princess,nolongerhumble andnolongerbenevolent,makesashow of sittinguponthe throne withthe same air of arrogance and self-satisfactionthe prince hadatthe start. She lowersherself intosittingpainfullyslowly,eachmuscle movementapersonal,vindictiveattackonthe prince. Finally,once she positionsherself.She raisesthe crowntoface-level,justlike she didwiththe tiara. Thistime,she carrieson raisingitand donsiton her head.She glaresatthe prince onthe floor. Sittingonhisthrone,inhisclothes,inhiscrownshe has beenfull corruptedbyherlatentdesire for powerandthe pair’sdynamichascompletelyswitched.
