- Introduce yourself and the presentation Name and designation I'm here today to talk about GameUp which is a research project about game-based mobility training and motivation for senior citizens Or more specifically, our work with game design and production in this area of research
- Based in Tromsø, Norway, way up north which is an unlikely place to find a video game company But that's because we were formerly working for EA/ Playfish and Tromsø was one of its many studios at the height of the social game boom – second only to Zynga – before the mobile/tablet revolution took over and the studio was closed down in 2012 The good news is that 3 brave new studios formed out of this, leading to a healthy game development scene in Tromsø
- We have a rather eclectic range of projects The first on the top left an interactive book that we're developing for young kids right up to social media campaigns and web pages we design for clients in Tromsø Presented one of our serious game project funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Environment– Super Scrap Squad at a conference in Tromsø last year which was a project targeted at youths and motivate them to recycle by using elements of fantasy and super heroism Caught the attention of a key GameUp partner, Norut who was also presenting their work with elderly gamers
- Roped in to replace an earlier game developer in the consortium to focus on game design and co-development Effectively started mid-way to the project at the end of 2013 7 partners in total – Norway, Spanish, Swiss AAL Research Project that will end sometime in 2015 For us it was a fantastic opportunity to learn the subtleties of designing games for the elderly Great opportunity to involve ourselves with research work which is a growing sector particulalrly in tromsø
- 3 key things Indoor portion with Kinect Outdoor portion with a step counter – in our case Fitbit A portal for caregivers and medical professionals to set parameters and analytics of our elderly users
- Exercises developed by Klinikken Valens our swiss partner Based on exercises catered for the target audience to improve their mobility Range of motion, strength and balance To improve their overall capabilities
- This was the early prototype before we joined in Apple-picking – A combination of several exercises Proof of concept – no story to it yet
- Physiotherapist testing out that it works
- User feedback – very different from what we who have been working on commercial game design are used to Color Text Slow pace- mobility impairments – not too many on-screen artifacts
- How can we engage a user group that has not been exposed to games? Analyze the work done so far by the GameUp partners Talking with the user group Design a game specifically for the user group that ties all the elements together Borrow from our experience as social game designers Created a design brief to start from
- Farmville! But also a good point of reference that most of our elderly users can relate to on an emotional level
- We've so far focused on building on the apple-picking you saw earlier but other mini-games
- New prototype – taking in elements of our game design documentation
- A party! Which can only happen once the users complete the tasks which adds a social dimension to the game design
- We have shown our users the prototype and our user group started to get excited – have a connection with the universe we're presenting No concrete research findings but moving into clinical trials and we're very excited to see the results
- The work in game development for elderly is still at an early stage Lots of potential for better story-centric game design to better engage this user group and for game designers such as us to contribute Take elements from well established game design and consider better ways to modify it for our user group Feel free to contact us for enquiries and thank you for your attention
