This document describes an intercultural garden project at the University of Tsukuba in Japan that aims to create an open space to promote social inclusion. The project involves regular gardening work and occasional cultural events attended by both Japanese and international students and community members. In 2016, the pilot project found it was easier to attract people to occasional events than regular gardening activities. More effort is still needed to promote daily communication between different cultural groups through implementing additional approaches. The researchers plan to continue action research in 2017-2018 to make the space more effective at fostering intercultural exchange.
