Design
  Rational:
  Crayola

For  the  Crayola  website  redesign,  I  wanted  the  home  page  to  be  simple  enough  that
even  a  young  child  could  navigate  to  find  the  games  and  interactive  features  on  their
own.  I  choose  to  make  sure  you  could  easily  find  the  link  (by  words  and  picture)  for
the  Playzone.

I  went  with  a  green  background  on  all  of  the  comps,  only  changing  the  textures
because  green  is  easy  on  the  eyes  and  compliments  the  colorful  elements  that  will
no  doubt  devour  the  page!  The  fonts  that  I  chose  are  playful  for  children,  and
unique.  You  won’t  find  these  fonts  in  too  many  places  around  the  internet  which  I
feel  helps  my  design  to  help  stand  out  from  the  competition.

The  overall  feel  of  all  of  my  comps  is  childlike  but  calm  enough  that  an  adult  could
easily  find  what  they  are  looking  for  also.  I  feel  like  a  lot  of  websites  geared  towards
children  end  up  having  too  much  “fluff”,  and  thus  take  a  little  longer  to  load.  As  an
adult,  we  may  think  that  an  extra  20-‐30  seconds  isn’t  much,  but  for  a  child  that  could
mean  the  difference  between  staying  on  our  site  or  leaving  to  find  another  site!  This
is  why  I  chose  to  keep  the  home  page  clean  with  simple  hierarchy  and  an  easy  flow.

Composition
  #1

On  this  first  comp,  I  included  the  idea  of  an  interactive  dry  erase  board.  I  have  a
child  myself,  and  he  LOVES  to  doodle.  He  also  loves  not  having  to  click  a  bunch  to  get
to  a  page  to  actually  do  something  fun.  My  thinking  behind  this  idea  on  the  front
page  is  that  adults  can  read  and  thus  easily  find  what  they  are  looking  for…  and  hey,
they  may  like  to  doodle  too!  Children  however  may  not  be  old  enough  to  read  yet,  or
may  still  be  learning.  If  they  get  frustrated  because  they  can’t  find  the  Playzone,
chances  are  they  will  leave.

Composition
  #2

With  this  composition,  I  geared  it  toward  the  adults  rather  than  the  kids.  This  idea
could  possibly  be  a  high  selling  point  for  an  adult  customer.  It  could  also  attract  kids
attention  (when  they  normally  wouldn’t  look  at  the  products!)  and  they’d  ask  their
parents  to  look  at  it,  ultimately  it  could  lead  to  the  purchase  of  the  product.  By
focusing  on  only  one  product,  there  is  more  of  a  chance  of  repeated  views  thereby
embedding  the  idea  of  the  product  into  their  heads.

Composition
  #3

For  my  third  composition,  I  decided  to  have  a  slideshow  that  could  be  controlled  by
the  viewer.  This  slideshow  would  have  featured  products  and  important
information  or  tips.  There  would  be  clickable  arrows  so  that  the  viewer  could  move
at  their  own  pace,  however  when  they  are  not  scrolling  it  would  play  slow  enough
that  something  might  catch  their  attention.

Composition
  #4

On  my  last  composition,  I  switched  things  up  a  bit.  At  the  top  of  the  page,  you’ll  find
a  scrolling  bar  with  featured  products.  Clicking  on  this  banner  would  take  you  to  the
products  page,  which  would  have  a  section  for  the  featured  products  at  the  top.  This
way  if  something  catches  their  attention,  they  could  locate  and  potentially  purchase
it.

In  the  main  content  area  of  the  page,  you  would  see  a  big  box,  with  the  Playzone  logo
in  it.  The  content  area  would  be  completely  interactive.  By  moving  the  mouse,
different  strokes  would  appear.  As  pictured  here,  there  is  a  purple  starbust  that
followed  the  mouse.  This  could  change  colors  and  or  designs  at  any  time,  but  will
only  work  by  moving  the  mouse  over  this  area.  By  clicking  in  the  center  on  the
words  or  Crayola  graphic,  you  would  be  taken  to  the  Playzone  area.
