“There are people in the world so hungry, that God cannot
appear to them except in the form of bread.” - Mahatma
Gandhi
What is Global Hunger index ?
The Global Hunger Index (GHI) is a tool for comprehensively
measuring and tracking hunger at global, regional, and national
levels. The Global Hunger Index aims to track hunger at the
world, regional and country levels.

India’s Global Hunger Index Rankings
Global Hunger Index 2022
India’s ranking in Global Hunger Index 2022 is 107 (slipped from the 2021 index of 101) out of
121 countries. With a score of 29.1, India has a level of hunger that is serious.
The index is jointly released by Concern Worldwide and Welthungerhilfe every October. The
Hunger Index measures countries’ performance on four component indicators –
undernourishment, child wasting, child stunting and child mortality.
India has slipped 6 positions from its 2021 rank of 101.
● According to the latest data, India has the highest child wasting rate of all countries
covered in the GHI.
● India is ranked behind most of its neighbouring countries. Their ranks are given below:
● Pakistan – 99
● Sri Lanka – 64
● Nepal – 81
● Bangladesh – 84
The only country in South Asia that performs worse than India on the index is Afghanistan with
109th rank.
What can we do to decrease it ?
Reducing food waste would be a huge step forward and every
person can contribute to the solution of the problem by simply
lowering their personal food waste. Even if just 25% of all
wasted food around the globe could be saved, it would be
possible to feed 870 million people suffering from hunger.
World Food Day
World Food Day is observed annually on 16 October to highlight the millions of people worldwide
who cannot afford a healthy diet and the need for regular access to nutritious food. The theme
for 2022 was Leave NO ONE behind. The theme for 2023 is yet to be released.
Here are some previous years’ theme for World Food Day:
2017: Change the future of migration. Invest in food security and rural development.
2018: “Our Actions Are Our Future, Ending World Hunger by 2030 is Possible”
2019: “Our Actions Are Our Future, Healthy Diets for A #ZeroHungerWorld”
2020: “Grow, Nourish, Sustain. Together”
2021: “Safe food now for a healthy tomorrow”
2022: Leave NO ONE behind
World Food Programme (WFP) received the 2020 Nobel Prize in Peace for their efforts
to fight hunger and for playing the main role in stopping the use of hunger as a weapon for
war and conflict.
