Description of Essay Heroes and “Ordinary People” Changing the World. In these times many of our prominent power holders who represent “success” are those known for their business acumen. Now consider that most of what has been created that ensures a democratic and just society here in Canada was fought for (and is fought for) by people from the margins. By looking through a hundred years of Canadian history consider what those from the margins have risked and why those risks even exist and how the image of success excludes their work and lives. What are we taught about obedience and compliance? And how does this relate to our focus as a society on getting the job? What is author’s main purpose is? (What is the key question addressed in the reading?)
What are the author’s conclusions?
What facts, experiences, data, or other evidence does the author use to support her/his conclusions?
What are key assumptions that underpin the author’s argument/thinking (what does the author take for granted)?
What is the author’s “point of view” (what does the author look at and how does she/he see it)?
2. Respond critically to the readings
You can respond and demonstrate critical thinking in a number of different ways. Here are some suggestions for how you might respond. You do not have to do all of them, and it would be good to select different options for different CTPs!

3) Writing Style: Only the Chicago Manual Style of writing should be used throughout the paper

Globalization can be defined as the way through which firms or other organizations develop international ties and begin to function on an international level as opposed to simply operating within the national level. It means that firms begin targeting even customers from other countries across the globe, hiring employees from other countries and, open branches in other countries.
The internet has been very useful in fostering globalization. Through the internet, there is easier communication among people across the globe as emails, social media and other forms of formal communication can be used. The internet has also made it easy to market as websites are used to foster international marketing through use of websites, emails and through the social media. Therefore, the internet has been a key driver towards encouraging and promoting globalization through easier communication, increased socialization and through increased marketing efforts.

HINTS ON PRESENTATION
One issue about which students worry , is the thought of being accused of writing only 'their own opinion'. Opinion is involved in everything that is written. However, the following practices help avoid essays which are unbalanced, or opinionated.
1. Present conflicting ideas. It is often useful to say that 'one explanation is...' but 'some contrary views are expressed by... ', or 'one way of understanding this is...' Try to entertain alternative explanations or interpretations.
2. Present supporting evidence. Often you can choose between different explanations by showing that evidence supports one position and not others.
3. Make use of quotations. Quoting the 'experts' can often be an effective strategy (although experts can be wrong.)
4. Structuring information in sequence. Your ideas should build on one another. Once you have established a point (either through quotation or evidence, or both), it can be used effectively to argue against other interpretations.

What did Turner attempt to do? How were these men similar? How did they view slavery and freedom? How did white society react to them, and why?

6 - The various reform and utopian communities that sprang up throughout America during the first part of the nineteenth century typically understood the meaning of freedom differently from mainstream Americans. Globalization can be defined as the way through which firms or other organizations develop international ties and begin to function on an international level as opposed to simply operating within the national level. It means that firms begin targeting even customers from other countries across the globe, hiring employees from other countries and, open branches in other countries.
The internet has been very useful in fostering globalization. Through the internet, there is easier communication among people across the globe as emails, social media and other forms of formal communication can be used. The internet has also made it easy to market as websites are used to foster international marketing through use of websites, emails and through the social media. Therefore, the internet has been a key driver towards encouraging and promoting globalization through easier communication, increased socialization and through increased marketing efforts.

The site explains that one common culture, that is the global culture, will be one culture to be used worldwide, and this is because of globalization. There is the likelihood of losing individual beliefs of every country and instead, having one broad culture that accommodates everyone. CITING SOURCES/REFERENCES
Citing references refers to the acknowledgment in your paper of the sources of words, information, ideas, or interpretations other than your own. These may be in terms of paraphrases or direct quotation of others. In either case, documentation is mandatory.
HINTS ON PRESENTATION
One issue about which students worry , is the thought of being accused of writing only 'their own opinion'. Opinion is involved in everything that is written. However, the following practices help avoid essays which are unbalanced, or opinionated.
1. Present conflicting ideas. It is often useful to say that 'one explanation is...' but 'some contrary views are expressed by... ', or 'one way of understanding this is...' Try to entertain alternative explanations or interpretations.
2. Present supporting evidence. Often you can choose between different explanations by showing that evidence supports one position and not others.
3. Make use of quotations. Quoting the 'experts' can often be an effective strategy (although experts can be wrong.)
4. Structuring information in sequence. Your ideas should build on one another. Once you have established a point (either through quotation or evidence, or both), it can be used effectively to argue against other interpretations.
EVALUATING A PAPER
General criteria of evaluation are spelled out below but they have, of course, been central to everything said above. They are loosely arranged in order of importance.
1. Statement of clear purpose in the introduction.
2. Clear, precise, specification of an important sociological question (puzzle, topic).
3. Logical development of a well-rounded argument.
4. Evidence that the nature of the topic under consideration is understood (for example: awareness and appreciation of alternative views).

Usually, too, authors distinguish advertising from salesmanship by defining it as mediated persuasion aimed at an audience rather than one-to-one communication with a potential customer. The boundaries blur here, too. When you log on to Amazon.com, a screen often addresses you by name and suggests that, based on your past purchases, you might want to buy certain books or CDs, selected just for you. A telephone call with an automated telemarketing message is equally irritating whether we classify it as advertising or sales effort.
In United States history, advertising has responded to changing business demands, media technologies, and cultural contexts, and it is here, not in a fruitless search for the very first advertisement, that we should begin. In the eighteenth century, many American colonists enjoyed imported British consumer products such as porcelain, furniture, and musical instruments, but also worried about dependence on imported manufactured goods.
Advertisements in colonial America were most frequently announcements of goods on hand, but even in this early period, persuasive appeals accompanied dry descriptions. Benjamin Franklin’s
Pennsylvania Gazette
reached out to readers with new devices like headlines, illustrations, and advertising placed next to editorial material. Eighteenth- and nineteenth-century advertisements were not only for consumer goods. A particularly disturbing form of early American advertisements were notices of slave sales or appeals for the capture of escaped slaves. (

) Historians have used these advertisements as sources to examine tactics of resistance and escape, to study the health, skills, and other characteristics of enslaved men and women, and to explore slaveholders’ perceptions of the people they held in bondage.
Despite the ongoing “market revolution,” early and mid- nineteenth-century advertisements rarely demonstrate striking changes in advertising appeals. Newspapers almost never printed ads wider than a single column and generally eschewed illustrations and even special typefaces. Magazine ad styles were also restrained, with most publications segregating advertisements on the back pages. Equally significant, until late in the nineteenth century, there were few companies mass producing branded consumer products. Patent medicine ads proved the main exception to this pattern. In an era when conventional medicine seldom provided cures, manufacturers of potions and pills vied for consumer attention with large, often outrageous, promises and colorful, dramatic advertis.
