Around 2 million Americans suffer from emphysema. Emphysema is known as a disease of the
lung that cause shortness of breath due to over inflation of the alveoli or air sacs in the lungs. It
is a progressive and irreversible condition in which the alveoli are damaged by inhaled irritants. In
this paper I will be discussing with you the causes, the process in which this disease develops, signs
and symptoms, the diagnosis, and any treatment of emphysema.
Causes
Emphysema is caused by a plethora of problems that I will soon discuss, but the number one cause
of emphysema is due to smoking. It is known that 85% of patients who get emphysema smoke, but
not all smokers will develop emphysema depending on their genetics. Smoking destroys the lung
tissue obstructing the airflow and can also cause inflammation and irritate the airways causing an

Some patients dealing with emphysema may not even know they have the disease. The common
symptom of emphysema is shortness of breath. Its noticed during the earlier stages of the disease
when you re exercising or doing strenuous activities, also a chronic cough would be present. In the
later stages patients start to feel breathless while at rest, catching infections in the lungs often,
wheezing, fatigue, cyanosis of the extremities and copious mucus. The most noticeable sign of
