This 2-week dermatology course for 4th year medical students includes clinical experience in dermatology units and clinics as well as didactic sessions. The course objectives are for students to develop skills in diagnosing and managing common skin conditions and recognizing cutaneous manifestations of systemic diseases. Students will examine patients, observe procedures, participate in lectures, seminars and self-directed learning sessions. Assessment includes case write-ups, a log book, presentations, attitude evaluations and a final exam with MCQ and OSCE stations.

2. MODULE: DERMATOLOGY

DURATION: 2 Weeks (80 Hours)

3. INTRODUCTION
Skin diseases are common in the community. Most common
skin diseases can be easily diagnosed and managed with
adequate amount of training at the MD level. It is therefore
imperative that Dermatology is given due emphasis in the
undergraduate curriculum.

4. COURSE SYNOPSIS)
2 Week Dermatology course in the year 4 MD programme
Consists of:
- Hospital-based consultations as part of a team under the
direction of the resident dermatologist
- Hospital-based specialist Dermatology clinics , under
direction of resident dermatologist
- Didactic sessions within the Dermatology unit

5. The course includes:
•A two-week clinical attachment at the Dermatology unit, Department
of Medicine, Hospital Angkatan Tentera Tuanku Mizan (HATT Mizan),
Wangsa Maju Kuala Lumpur. The medical wards and specialist
dermatology clinics at HAT Terendak, Melaka and HAT Lumut, Perak
will also be used.. Students will ‘clerk’ dermatological patients both in
the specialist Dermatology clinics and on the wards. Teaching at the
specialist outpatient clinics will also include observation of common
procedures such as potassium hydroxide preparations, skin biopsy,
electrosurgery and cryotherapy.
•A series of three lectures/interactive sessions on common
dermatological conditions will be conducted at the Department of
Medicine
•Tutorial/Seminar presentations by students, moderated by a
lecturer..

6. COURSE OBJECTIVES - students to be:
Able to describe cutaneous and mucosal lesions using standard dermatological
terminology.
Able to formulate a differential diagnosis based on information obtained from
history-taking and physical examination.
Able to recognize clinical presentations and psychosocial aspects of common
dermatological disorders and common cutaneous manifestations of systemic
diseases.
Familiar with common investigations and procedures in dermatology and their
indications.
Able to apply the basic principles of dermatological therapeutics to the
management of specific dermatological diseases.
Familiar with the diagnosis and management of sexually transmitted infections
(STI) and leprosy.
