Apache Mesos is an open source cluster manager that provides efficient resource isolation for distributed frameworks—similar to Google’s “Borg” and “Omega” projects for warehouse scale computing. It is based on isolation features in the modern kernel: “cgroups” in Linux, “zones” in Solaris.
Google’s “Omega” research paper shows that while 80% of the jobs on a given cluster may be batch (e.g., MapReduce), 55-60% of cluster resources go toward services. The batch jobs on a cluster are the easy part—services are much more complex to schedule efficiently. However by mixing workloads, the overall problem of scheduling resources can be greatly improved.
Given the use of Mesos as the kernel for a “data center OS”, two additional open source components Chronos (like Unix “cron”) and Marathon (like Unix “init.d”) serve as the building blocks for creating distributed, fault-tolerant, highly-available apps at scale.
This talk will examine case studies of Mesos uses in production at scale: ranging from Twitter (100% on prem) to Airbnb (100% cloud), plus MediaCrossing, Categorize, HubSpot, etc. How have these organizations leveraged Mesos to build better, more scalable and efficient distributed apps? Lessons from the Mesos developer community show that one can port an existing framework with a wrapper in approximately 100 line of code. Moreover, an important lesson from Spark is that based on “data center OS” building blocks one can rewrite a distributed system much like Hadoop to be 100x faster within a relatively small amount of source code.
These case studies illustrate the obvious benefits over prior approaches based on virtualization: scalability, elasticity, fault-tolerance, high availability, improved utilization rates, etc. Less obvious outcomes also include: reduced time for engineers to ramp-up new services at scale; reduced latency between batch and services, enabling new high-ROI use cases; and enabling dev/test apps to run on a production cluster without disrupting operations.

Microservice architecture is a popular design pattern for DevOps deployments of cloud native applications. It's single purpose, loosely coupled, bounded context design lends itself to the independent life cycle required to quickly deploy and scale in the cloud. Docker containerization of these services further aids in the zero down-time deployments of these horizontally scalable services. But how do you keep them loosely coupled? How do they communicate without knowing about each other? and how do you keep all of those containers patched from new vulnerabilities that are being discovered every day?
This talk discusses the implementation of a Container Vulnerability Remediation Services that itself is designed as a collection of loosely coupled microservices that communicate via publish/subscribe messaging model using Kafka, Cloud Functions (OpenWhisk), and REST APIs implemented in Python Flask. This design keeps each microservice independent and replaceable, while enabling expandability for new services to participate in business functions without any pre-determined knowledge of the business workflow.
Following simple patterns of good application design can allow you to scale your application for your customers easily. This presentation dives into the 12 factor application design and demo how this applies to containers and deployments on Amazon ECS and Fargate. We'll take a look at tooling that can be used to simplify your workflow and help you adopt the principles of the 12 factor application.

Doing development and test for an application on your laptop or a single server is an effective and quick way to ensure functionality, but can be limiting for larger applications. When the application is ready to deploy into production using containers, you’re going to want to use more than one server to increase resources and provide distributed availability. There are a large number of orchestration platforms for Docker which allow you to define an application consisting of one or more containers, and then coordinate deploying the application across small and large farms of servers. In this session we will concentrate on the three most popular orchestration platforms: Mesos, Kubernetes, and Docker Swarm. Running Distributed TensorFlow with GPUs on Mesos with DC/OS Mesosphere Inc.
Running distributed TensorFlow is challenging, especially if you want to train large models on your own infrastructure. In this talk, Kevin Klues presents an open source TensorFlow framework for distributed training on DC/OS. This framework takes the pain out of deploying distributed TensorFlow, so you can spend less time worrying about your deployment strategy and more time building out your model.

Prior to joining Mesosphere, Kevin worked at Google on an experimental operating system for data centers called Akaros. In a past life, Kevin was a lead developer of the TinyOS project, working at Stanford University, the Technical University of Berlin, and the CSIRO in Australia. Manage Microservices & Fast Data Systems on One Platform w/ DC/OSMesosphere Inc.
The application landscape inside our data center is changing: Along with the trend of moving toward microservices and containers, there are a number of new distributed data processing frameworks such as Kafka or Cassandra being released on a weekly basis. These changes have implications for the ways we think about infrastructure. With the growing need for computing power and the rise of distributed applications comes the need for a reliable and simple-use cluster manager and programming abstraction.
In this presentation, Mesosphere explains how to use DC/OS to manage microservices and fast data systems on a single platform. Jolt: Distributed, fault-tolerant test running at scale using MesosMesosphere Inc.
In this presentation, Kyle Kelly, Sunil Shah and Timmy Zhu present Jolt, a system that aims to solve the problem of running integration tests with a high fixed resource cost at scale. We use Mesos plus a custom open source framework called Task Processing to run integration tests for the Yelp website in a massively parallel manner - taking test runs down from a few days to less than an hour.
