3. The term “Dendrimer” arise from two Greek word
“Dendron "meaning tree
“Meros” meaning part
Dendrimers are also known as cascade molecules
and arborols.
Dendrimers are hyper-branched, globular,
monodisperse, three dimensional nanoscale
synthetic polymers, having very well defined size,
shape and definite molecular weight .
4. Structure of dendrimers
Structure of Dendrimer possess 3 distinct units
A Central core unit
Generations
Terminal functional group
.
Core Surface
Interior
5. Properties
Structure Compact and Globular
synthesis Careful and stepwise growth
Structure control Very high
Shape spherical
Crystallinitty Non crystalline, amorphous material, lower glas
temperature
Nonpolar solubility high
Aqueous solubility high
viscosity Non liner relationship with molecular weight
reactivity high
7. Method of preparation
Divergent method
Convergent method
Mixed or double exponetial
method
8.
9. Divergent method
• Dendrimers grow from inside to outside.
• Reactive core molecule reacts with
monomer molecule which has 2 dormant and
one reactive group
• This combination gives first generation
dendrimers.
• The first generation dendrimers have
reactive periphery,which reacts with another
monomer molecule and gives the second
generation.
• This prosses is continued for several
generations.
• PAMAM is first synthesized dendrimers by
using this method
10. advantage
large quantities of dendrimers can
grow by this method.
Disadvantage
Main problem with this method is the
side reaction and incomplete
reaction of end group.
Large quantity of reagent is required
to prevent this problem
11. Convergent method
• dendrimers grow from outside to
inside.
• 2 step synthesis
First step:
the surface unit links together to
form a large wedge.
Second step:
the large surface units attached to
the multifunctional core units.
12. advantages
1. product is easily purified.
2. Minimization of defects in the
final structure.
Limitation
High generation dendrimers can
not be formed .
13. Mixed method
most advance and recent method.
Combination of both two methods.
In this method a single starting
material is taken from which two
monomers are prepared by
divergent and convergent method.
Then these monomers are reacted
together to give an orthogonally
protected trimer.
This trimer may be use to repeat the
growth process again.
