UTES, or underground thermal energy storage, can effectively be combined with soil remediation and groundwater management. Deltares is conducting a program combining basic research with practical considerations to maximize the potential of UTES. Regional coordination of UTES prevents conflicts over aquifer use, improves efficiency by matching different user needs, and allows companies to store heat underground rather than releasing it into surface water. UTES also aids bioremediation of polluted soil and groundwater by speeding up degradation processes at higher temperatures.
