Deforestation is the permanent destruction of forests to make land available for other uses. An estimated 18 million acres of forest are lost each year according to the FAO. About half of the world's tropical forests have been cleared, forests currently cover 30% of the world's land, and deforestation contributes 6-12% of annual global carbon dioxide emissions.
