As you can see from the definition above, organizational behavior encompasses a wide range of topics, such as human behavior, change, leadership, teams, etc. Since many of these topics are covered elsewhere in the leadership guide, this paper will focus on a few parts of OB: elements, models, social systems, OD, work life, action learning, and change.
Elements of Organizational Behavior
The organization's base rests on management's philosophy, values, vision and goals. This in turn, drives the organizational culture that is composed of the formal organization, informal organization, and the social environment. The culture determines the type of leadership, communication, and group dynamics within the organization. The workers perceive this as the quality of work life which directs their degree of motivation. The final outcome are performance, individual satisfaction, and personal growth and development. All these elements combine to build the model or framework that the organization operates from.
Models of Organizational Behavior
There are four major models or frameworks that organizations operate out of, Autocratic, Custodial, Supportive, and Collegial (Cunningham, Eberle, 1990; Davis ,1967):
· Autocratic — The basis of this model is power with a managerial orientation of authority. The employees in turn are oriented towards obedience and dependence on the boss. The employee need that is met is subsistence. The performance result is minimal.
· Custodial — The basis of this model is economic resources with a managerial orientation of money. The employees in turn, are oriented towards security, benefits, and dependence on the organization. The employee need that is met is security. The performance result is passive cooperation.
· Supportive — The basis of this model is leadership with a managerial orientation of support. The employees in turn are oriented towards job performance and participation. The employee need that is met is status and recognition. The performance result is awakened drives.
· Collegial — The basis of this model is partnership with a managerial orientation of teamwork. The employees in turn are oriented towards responsible behavior and self-discipline. The employee need that is met is self-actualization. The performance result is moderate enthusiasm.

The OD Consultant
A change agent is a person or team responsible for beginning and maintaining a change
effort. Change agents may come from inside an organization, in which case they are
called internal consultants, or they may come from outside an organization, in which
case they are called external consultants. The role of the organizational development
(OD) consultant is to initiate, stimulate, and facilitate change. William Bridges
explains that things change but people transition (as cited in Montgomery, 2009). The
OD consultant is therefore concerned primarily with the people aspect of the change
events.
One of the basic roles of the consultant is to facilitate and teach the client how to
identify the problem, diagnose and solve the problem. This reduces the dependency of
the client on the consultant but also empowers the client and is associated with higher
corporate buy-in rates.
Clearly, OD consultants must have a number of skills in order to be successful. In
particular, consultants need to possess both leadership and management expertise. In a
leadership role, consultants should be able to facilitate rather than direct, keep
information flowing, and use multiple methods on a consistent basis.
Problem solving is another skill an effective consultant hones. He or she has to be able
to identify and focus on the next set of problems. Organizations and processes
experience flux, which often results in new and unanticipated problems, which cannot
be ignored. Inherent to the skill of problem solving, however, is valid diagnosis. So
how does an organizational consultant accurately decipher root problems?
The Diagnostic Process
The diagnosis is a two-fold process: an assessment of the variables, and a report on
possible corrective interventions. Diagnosis involves gathering data, interpreting the
data, identification of problem areas and options for solutions. Diagnostic tools consist
of interviews, surveys, instruments, observation and review of public records. To
many, diagnosis is the most important stage. Success or failure of change strategies is
dependent on several things but accurate diagnosis is critical. Failure to address the
root cause or intervening in processes that were previously fully functional is
inappropriate and costly change, but if the problem is properly diagnosed and the
intervention strategy appropriate, why can change still be so difficult for organizations
to enact smoothly?

do by examining the role of an organizational development consultant, the diagnostic

The OD Consultant
A change agent is a person or team responsible for beginning and maintaining a change
effort. Change agents may come from inside an organization, in which case they are
called internal consultants, or they may come from outside an organization, in which
case they are called external consultants. The role of the organizational development
(OD) consultant is to initiate, stimulate, and facilitate change. William Bridges
explains that things change but people transition (as cited in Montgomery, 2009). The
OD consultant is therefore concerned primarily with the people aspect of the change
events.
One of the basic roles of the consultant is to facilitate and teach the client how to
identify the problem, diagnose and solve the problem. This reduces the dependency of
the client on the consultant but also empowers the client and is associated with higher
corporate buy-in rates.
Clearly, OD consultants must have a number of skills in order to be successful. In
particular, consultants need to possess both leadership and management expertise. In a
leadership role, consultants should be able to facilitate rather than direct, keep
information flowing, and use multiple methods on a consistent basis.
Problem solving is another skill an effective consultant hones. He or she has to be able
to identify and focus on the next set of problems. Organizations and processes
experience flux, which often results in new and unanticipated problems, which cannot
be ignored. Inherent to the skill of problem solving, however, is valid diagnosis. So
how does an organizational consultant accurately decipher root problems?
The Diagnostic Process
The diagnosis is a two-fold process: an assessment of the variables, and a report on
possible corrective interventions. Diagnosis involves gathering data, interpreting the
data, identification of problem areas and options for solutions. Diagnostic tools consist
of interviews, surveys, instruments, observation and review of public records. To
many, diagnosis is the most important stage. Success or failure of change strategies is
dependent on several things but accurate diagnosis is critical. Failure to address the
root cause or intervening in processes that were previously fully functional is
inappropriate and costly change, but if the problem is properly diagnosed and the
intervention strategy appropriate, why can change still be so difficult for organizations
to enact smoothly?

decision is called for and identify the desired outcome(s). How you define a problem
shapes your understanding of its causes and where you will search for solutions.
First, explore the difference between what you expect and/or desire and the current

- 2. INTRODUCTION The Human Behavior in Organization – is the study of both group and individual performance and activity within an organization. This area of study examines human behavior in a work environment and determines its impact on job structure, performance, communication, motivation, leadership, etc. Human – Someone or something that is related to or associated with people or humanity. Behavior – is the way of a person or thing acts or reacts. Organization – means refer to group or business, or to the act of forming or establishing something. It can also refer to a structure for classifying things or to a system of arrangement or order
- 4. DECISION MAKING Decision making - Is the process of making choices by identifying a decision, gathering information, and assessing alternative resolutions. Using a step-by-step decision making process can help you make more deliberate, thoughtful decisions by organizing relevant information and defining alternatives.
- 5. Decision Making in Group Group decision-making and teamwork involved multiple individuals that analyze various issues and situations and consider how to solve them. The overall effectiveness of group decision-making depends on many factors. For example, TIME CONSTRAINTS OR ANY UNDERLYING CONFLICTS CAN IMPACT THE GROUP DECISION-MAKING OUTCOMES. That’s why, before problems occur, it’s vital to establish group decision-making procedures and monitor them along with their implementation
- 6. There are steps of decision making process. The following are the important step of the decision making process, its step maybe supported by different tools and techniques. However, we can follow as well a structural process of decision making as follows;
- 7. IDENTIFICATION OF THE PURPOSES OF THE DECISION In this step, the problem is thoroughly analyzed. There are couple of questions should asked when it comes to identifying the purposes of the decision
- 8. INFORMATION GATHERING A problem of an organization will have many stakeholders. In addition, there can be dozens of factors involved and affected a problem of an organization will have many stakeholders
- 9. PRINCIPLES FOR JUDGING THE ALTERNATIVES In this step the baseline criteria for judging the alternatives should be set up. When it comes to defining the criteria, organizational goals as well as the corporate culture should be taken into consideration
- 10. BRAINSTORM & ANALYZE THE DIFFERENCE CHOICES In this step brainstorming to list down all the ideas is the best option, before the idea generation step. It is vital to understand the causes of the problem and prioritization of causes.
- 11. EVALUATION OF ALTERNATIVES Use your judgment principles and decision making criteria to evaluate each alternative.
- 12. SELECT THE BEST ALTERNATIVES Once you go through from step 1 and step 5 this step is easy. In addition, the selection of the best alternative is an informed decision since you have already followed a methodology to derive and select the best alternative
- 13. EXECUTE THE DECISIONS Convert you decision into a plan or a sequence of activities. Execute your plan by yourself or with the help of subordinates
- 14. EVALUATE THE RESULTS Evaluate the outcome of your decision. When weather there is anything you should learn and then correct in future decision making
