CHARACTERS OF AS YOU LIKE IT
1.ROSALIND
2.CELIA
CHARACTER : ROSALIND
• The daughter of Duke Senior.
Rosalind, considered one of
Shakespeare’s most delightful
heroines, is independent minded,
strong-willed,good-hearted, and
terribly clever. Rather than slink off
into defeated exile, Rosalind
resourcefully uses her trip to the
Forest of Arden as an opportunity to
take control of her own destiny.
When she disguises herself as
Ganymede—ahandsome young
man , shepherd. Eventually ,Rosalind
is reunited withher father and
married to her faithful lover,Orlando.
CHARACTER :CELIA
• The daughter of Duke Frederick
and Rosalind’s dearest friend.
Celia’s devotion to Rosalind is
unmatched, as evidenced by
her decision to follow her cousin
into exile. To make the trip, Celia
assumes the disguise of a simple
shepherdess and calls herself
Aliena. As elucidated by her
extreme love of Rosalind and her
immediate devotion to Oliver,
whom she marries at the end of
the play.
ROSALIND AND CELIA
• Though they have similar backgrounds
and upbringings, Rosalind is much more
adventurousand unconventional than
Celia is. They are very close - so close
that Celia sides with her cousin and
defies her father to be with Rosalind.
Celia is neither as smart nor as witty as
Rosalind, but she is kind and loyal and
willing to go along with Rosalind's
scheme to sneak out of court and join
Duke Senior in the Forest of Arden,
where he holds court since he has been
banished by his brother, Celia's father.
• Celia would like to be as brave as
Rosalind, and she does make an
attempt, but she is not as well-suited to
the outdoorlife of a shepherdess as she
thought she would be. She discovers
her own kind of bravery in the process
of followingin Rosalind's footsteps,
but still lets her cousin take the lead.
• In the end, she marries Oliver, the
brother of Rosalind's love Orlando, and
Shakespeare ends the play leaving the
audience with the sense that the two
young womenwill remainclose friends.
ROSALIND AND CELIA
• An example of the friendship that exists between
Celia and Rosalind in “As You Like It” can be found
in Act 3 scene 4 lines 1-5:
• Rosalind: Never talk to me. I will weep.”
• Celia: Do, I prithee, but yet have the grace to
consider that tears do not become a man
• Rosalind: But have I not cause to weep?
• Celia: As good cause as one would desire;
therefore weep
ROSALIND AND CELIA
• In this conversation Celia takes on
the masculine role even though it is
Rosalind that is dressed as a man.
Celia is very strong at a point in the
play where Rosalind is facing
some emotional troubles. As the
more masculine of the two at this
time, Celia tells Rosalind that maybe
she should reconsider crying if she
is trying to be a man. One can see
the intense friendship that Celia and
Rosalind share in the passage when
Celia agrees that Rosalind does
have a good reason to cry.
