Greenhouse gases cause thegreenhouse effect. The primary greenhouse gases in Earth's atmosphere are water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and ozone. What causes greenhouse gas emissions? Coal burned in power stations contains carbon which combines with oxygen in the atmosphere to form carbon dioxide. The man-made (or anthropogenic) component of the greenhouse effect is caused by man's activities that emit greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. The most important of these is the burning of fossil fuels. How do greenhouse gas emissions contribute to climate change? A greenhouse gas is any gaseous compound in the atmosphere that is capable of absorbing infrared radiation, thereby trapping and holding heat in the atmosphere. By increasing the heat in the atmosphere, greenhouse gases are responsible for thegreenhouse effect, which ultimately leads to global warming Greenhouse Gases. ... Problematic GHGs include methane, nitrous oxide and especially carbon dioxide. By burning fossil fuels such as coal, natural gas and petroleum, humans have contributed large amounts of CO2 to the atmosphere. The United States produces most of its energy from these fossil fuels.
