Discussion Board #1
For the first discussion forum for the course,
explore why you have decided to take this
course. What do you hope to get out of the
experience? What do you want to learn? In
what ways do you want to be shaped or
changed? This response should be around 300
words. At the end of your posting, ask 1-2
questions that can be answered by your peers.
We will take until 9:30 for you to get started on
this task. Later we will type them in the
computer lab into a discussion forum on
Blackboard. Your audience is your instructor
and your class peers. You will be expected to
respond to a question from at least 3
postings and answer those who respond to
your posting.
Homework
Post your discussion board entry, respond
to two peers’ questions, and respond to
those that post to your discussion thread.
Write three goals for the course and how
you plan to attain them. (This is related to
your first reflection writing. It can be
handwritten or typed.)

criteria. What is done well? Are there ways they can
be improved?

Why? How does one become more motivated?
1. External

want
 Find an internal reason to move forward – internalizing
“Successful people live in the world of internal motivation, or find
ways to convert external motivation into internal motivation”
(Moody, 2013, pg. 31)
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Basic Needs
Do you agree with the structure of this hierarchy based on your
own experience and what you see in society?
1. Physiological Needs 1st

2. Safety Needs 2nd
 Security of body, employment, stability…
3. Loving/Belongingness Needs 3rd
 Friendship, family, affection, relationships…
4. Esteem Needs 4th

5. Self-Actualization 5th
 Reaching fulfillment in one’s life
“Maslow suggests that we all have a basic, driving desire to matter, to have
a life where we are doing what we were meant to do” (Moody, 2013, pg.
32).
Generation Gap
What challenges are there for first-generation college
students?
First-generation students
