Good morning. My name is David Lee and I am from IBM. Our original speakers Garrett McDonald and David Kelly unfortunately could not be here. David stepped on a nail in his garden late yesterday and is in hospital this morning. The good news is the doctor says he will live, although painfully for a while.
So this morning, I would like to take you through the SAP + IBM journey SO FAR, what is coming TOMORROW, and what we can do TODAY.
SAP was founded 45 years by 5 IBM employees incl HASSO PLATTNER and he’s the only one still at SAP. Hasso Plattner developed HANA. The first SAP release ran on the IBM mainframe. Fast forward 45 years later, We are now running SAP HANA and S4 on IBM Power extremely well.

IBM SAP International Competence Centre is located at SAP HQ in Walldorf Germany. And they guide SAP to develop new Software to be optimised for IBM Power Servers, and at the same time help IBM develop new generation of Hardware to best run SAP HANA Software.

Yesterday morning we heard Ken Tsai from SAP outline the future of SAP software bringing AI and Machine Learning into new sap software.
IBM is pioneering the AI and Cognitive Era. We’ve made huge advances in Natural Language processing where you can speak in plain English or plain Korean or Japanese, French, Spanish, German. And importantly scaling up the expertise of a human with machine learning. You might recall IBM Watson playing and winning against the JEOPARDY all-time champions. WATSON Jeopardy was an expert in Wikipedia, having ingested millions of wikipedia pages, and then had to respond in 1 or 2 seconds to beat the human champions.
By the end of 2017, IBM Watson will be available to one billion consumers, expertly helping them choose the right insurance options, troubleshoot their IT, get much faster service from their bank and literally hundreds more applications.
The learning phase of machine learning takes a lot of resource over months. Teaching the machine what is, or is not, a bicycle, one image at a time. The more images you use to learn, the more accurate is your AI model. And that learning takes significant computing power and scale.
We have made enormous improvement on image recognition. This power utility is now machine reading infrared images of power lines, taken by drones, to know where hotspots are on the lines, and so schedule repairs and maintenance – when it is needed. And all without any human involvement. They slashed human inspection times by 90%
GPU acceleration is a critical piece of what has made AI achievable today. Using IBM POWER with GPU accelerators, we complete one month of machine learning in one hour. If you have a Power system, you can start developing your AI apps immediately with the IBM download. Ken Tsai mentioned Google Tensorflow. I have one small customer who is using IBM AI to machine read the 1000 emails coming into their company inbox every day, automatically analysing sentiment and tone from their clients. They also machine-read service tickets generated by equipment to automatically deterime if a genuine service call nees to be placed. Both projects combined have saved thousands of hours of people-time, energy and effort. T And the real beauty of it was that it was a srelatively small outlay of $10,000. So even if you do not have a large budget there are low cost AI projects you can do with IBM with almost immediate payback.

We have one insurance company using speech to text on a phone call where the claimant says “I had a car crash or collision or accident or a PRANG,”, in Australian vernacular. And its all recognised as the same thing by IBM Watson. It is great time to be at IBM now, or partnering with IBM. We have some cool AI technology.
IBM has 5000 Successful SAP Installations Globally. And 850 running HANA on IBM POWER. And I will talk about two of them.
Foodstuffs South Island are a true NZ Success Story. With over 10,000 staff and 200 Supermarkets they annually sell 5 million heads of Broccoli, 8 million kg of bananas and 70 million litres of milk. And importantly process 2.5 million invoices. Supermarket sales trigger orders with pick slips needed to be ready by 4:00am every day. Foodstuffs were running SAP BW Accelerator but found that their time window had reduced to 15 min with daily processing completing at 3:45am. If anything went wrong their entire operation halted. So they needed a solution, and to act quickly. Foodstuffs saw SAP HANA as the answer to this immediate problem and key to their future. They would start with HANA BW. Move the ERP to Suite on HANA and finally run S/4HANA. The SAP sizing recommended a 3TB HANA BW system. But they had some critical constraints. 1st - The entire server and storage infrastructure needed to fit into 35 rack units, the available room in their data centre. Otherwise the data centre wall had to be knocked down and the DC expanded – at a cost of $500K. 2nd – Foodstuffs looked at various HW vendors Intel appliance server clusters. These all locked in a fixed appliance with fixed memory size that could not be changed as Foodstuffs grew their HANA environment. With an entire separate server cluster needed for each SAP application and separate clusters needed for production, development, testing, high availability, as VM’s not supporting mixed production and non-prod on Intel and VMWare. All these server clusters massively exceeded the hard limit of 35 rack units. 3rd – Foodstuffs contacted IBM to look at an attractive alternative. The IBM POWER Server which ran SAP HANA production , dev, test, HA all in virtual machines on the one physical server. As well as multiple SAP applications. So Foodstuffs compared 12 physical Intel servers versus only 2 IBM Power servers. 4th - The added bonus was that as Foodstuffs grew their HANA needs, they could very easily shift memory and cpu from the memory and cpu pool on their single IBM POWER server into the HANA env. So the dollar cost of changing and growing SAP HANA was negligible versus non-IBM alternatives. So it was a no-brainer and became a very simple decision to run HANA BW on IBM POWER. 5th. What about Cloud for HANA? found that cloud infrastructure was a lower cost for a relatively small HANA memory footprint, but grew to be much higher cost for large memory footprint, compared to IBM POWER infrastructure. So Foodstuffs purchased two IBM Power servers with 8TB each – one for production and one for Dev/Test/HA/DR to run their entire SAP SW env. RESULT ? The outcome was that the rapid smooth and successful deployment of HANA BW on POWER gave Foodstuffs Sth Island the confidence to quickly move to testing the Suite on HANA and SAP Transport modules on IBM POWER, now in production. And are now testing S/4HANA on IBM POWER. So IBM and SAP have a delighted customer in Foodstuffs Sth Island in NZ.
