David Alfaro Siqueiros was a Mexican social realist painter and muralist born in 1896 who helped establish the Mexican Muralism movement alongside Diego Rivera and Jose Clemente Orozco. He portrayed his political ideology in his art and was actively involved in the Mexican Revolution and communist politics, for which he was often imprisoned by the Mexican government. Siqueiros painted large, dynamic murals on public buildings in Mexico that conveyed social and political messages through dramatic use of light, shadow, and composition.
