DataTiles is a modular platform that combines physical and graphical user interface elements to allow for flexible control of digital information. Transparent "tiles" with printed or dynamic graphical content can be physically manipulated and placed next to each other to connect and exchange information. This merges tangible and graphical interaction paradigms. Tiles include application, portal, parameter and container types. Users interact by placing and moving tiles, using pen gestures on tiles, and connecting parameter flows between tiles. The system was implemented on a PC using Java with RFID tagged acrylic tiles and a pen tablet for input. Early user experiences found visual feedback was important and users took control by physically manipulating tiles. Potential applications include interfaces for networked information, information appliances, remote collaboration
