If implemented through open standards, data portability could allow users to auto-fill profiles on new sites using their existing data and networks, while also providing opportunities for developers and marketers through faster development and improved social features. However, large social networks may be reluctant to adopt data portability due to concerns that it could reduce user "lock-in".
