- The Data Center Energy Practitioner (DCEP) Program is driven by the fact that significant knowledge, training, and skills are required to perform accurate energy assessments for saving energy in data centers. Benefits of using Practitioners include consistency of qualifications and approach as well as a high level of repeatability and credibility of recommendations. The DCEP will work with the onsite data center team through training and other means on ways to use energy more efficiently in their data centers; replication is a key goal of the energy training-assessment program. Although the energy assessment is not meant to be a traditional investment-grade audit, the assessment is designed to provide the data center industry with immediate, tangible, and sustainable results such as energy, economic, and environmental savings. DOE tools training and general system energy management training are focal points. An end result is the development of a roadmap for progress. There are two main objectives with the DCEP Energy Assessments strategy. First, accelerate energy savings through assessments by developing an energy profile with the internal data center team, performing assessments in multiple data center systems, identifying a complete list of potential energy saving measures, conducting an investment-grade assessment for one project, and documenting cost and energy savings from projects implemented. Second, accelerate internal processes for multiplying savings through replication by helping organization form an energy management team/program, creating internal champions to lead ongoing energy savings efforts, training the Site Lead in energy management and the use of the DOE Tool Suite, and building internal awareness and expertise to multiply savings.
- The DCEP candidate needs to pass minimum qualifications and either one (Level1) or two (Level 1 + Level 2) certification exams, including demonstration of proficiency in the use of select DOE Tools (DC Pro Tool + Air Management Tool). The Level 1 Practitioner (high-level) will be expected to have a good understanding of all data center disciplines (IT-equipment, air management, cooling, and electrical) for providing broad recommendations based on the high-level DC Pro Tool. The Level 2 Practitioners (in-depth) address energy opportunities using one or several of the in-depth System Assessment Tools covering the same four data center disciplines. The first phase of the Program includes the Level 1 as well as the Level 2 for cooling and air management (HVAC).

- Data center owners/operators can quickly diagnose how energy is being used by their data centers and how they might save energy and money by using the DC Pro tool. Use this tool as a first step to identify potential savings and to reduce environmental emissions. Once you have entered the data, you can complete a profile in about one hour. The tool provides an overview of energy use, savings potential, and a list of specific recommendations you can implement to realize savings.
