"API Design: From User Need to Finished Spec" by Andrew Jordan, ex-Product @T...TheFamily
Heard of Twilio? It's the $2.4B cloud communications company behind 2016's hottest IPO.
You use it everyday without knowing it. The text message saying your Uber arrived? Twilio sent it. When you lose your Netflix password? They have you covered.
Considered as one of the most innovative & developer-friendly company out there today, if there's something they got right it's the product!
We were glad to have Andrew Jordan, ex-Product Manager and early employee at Twilio share his experience on stage! In this talk, Jordan explains API design and principles, covering how to identify a good opportunity for an API, how to write a well defined API spec and how to gather user feedback and iterate on APIs.
Before quitting his job to travel, spent the last five years designing, building, and selling APIs at Twilio. The last product he shipped was a speech recognition API for the company's voice product. Once he's done traveling, he plans to look into new ideas around speech processing and insurance.

Creating a Successful API Program to Drive Digital TransformationPerficient, Inc.
API management is a driving discipline in the digital transformation movement that can unlock tremendous business value. Because APIs intersect at IT and the business, it’s important to understand how they can be used. APIs can connect inventory management with resource planning for better operational efficiency, integrate with partner organizations for increased sales, and push data to and from a mobile device for the connected enterprise and consumer. The core concepts of APIs are technical in nature, but their business applications are almost limitless.
Creating a successful API program goes way beyond choosing the right tool. The supporting components and disciplines (some tried and true and some emerging) around API management are a critical component of the comprehensive picture.
In this webinar, we discussed:
-The building blocks of a strong API program
-How to get executive buy-in
-Supporting components and disciplines of API management
-How APIs help to build a world-class digital business

At ING Bank, machine learning models are a key factor in making relevant engagements with our customers, empowering them to stay a step ahead in life and in business. In our efforts to make the model building process more rapid, compliant, validated and accessible to roles other than data scientists (such as data analysts or customer journey experts), we have structured it for an easy creation of propensity models.
In this talk, I will present this structure, focusing on pipelining data science models in Apache Spark. In particular, I will show how we use Apache Sqoop & Ranger to comply with GDPR, build a data science workflow on top of python and Jupyter, extend the SparkML libraries on PySpark to create custom standardizers and cross-validators, and show an in-house developed monitoring tool built on top of Elasticsearch for model evaluation.
Finally, I will describe the type of engagement analysts and customer journey experts have with the result set of the models created, and how we refine our dashboards (in IBM Cognos) accordingly.

In early 2020, Geisinger Health launched a multi-year digital transformation program to transform patient and caregiver experiences. The program sought to harness best-in-class technology solutions and innovation from the digital health ecosystem, and also envisioned the transformation of IT infrastructure to support digital health experiences. When the pandemic struck in early 2020, Geisinger’s leadership reaffirmed their commitment to the digital transformation road map and the strategic technology investments required to accelerate the transformation. To implement the road map, Geisinger established a Digital Transformation Office (DTO) to oversee the implementation of the road map, provide centralized governance, and enable technology partner selection for key aspects of the proposed road map. With broad cross-functional involvement and collaboration, the DTO was able to accelerate the transformation journey, improve digital engagement, and deliver millions of dollars in benefits.
Learning objectives
1) Identify best practices and learnings from how a large integrated health system is driving a multi-year digital transformation roadmap
2) Discover how technology is enabling digital transformation at the front and back end of healthcare operations and best practices in technology strategy and technology partner selection
3) Recognize how centralized governance can accelerate transformation and maximize value from technology investments

Gain New Insights by Analyzing Machine Logs using Machine Data Analytics and BigInsights.
Half of Fortune 500 companies experience more than 80 hours of system down time annually. Spread evenly over a year, that amounts to approximately 13 minutes every day. As a consumer, the thought of online bank operations being inaccessible so frequently is disturbing. As a business owner, when systems go down, all processes come to a stop. Work in progress is destroyed and failure to meet SLA’s and contractual obligations can result in expensive fees, adverse publicity, and loss of current and potential future customers. Ultimately the inability to provide a reliable and stable system results in loss of $$$’s. While the failure of these systems is inevitable, the ability to timely predict failures and intercept them before they occur is now a requirement.
A possible solution to the problem can be found is in the huge volumes of diagnostic big data generated at hardware, firmware, middleware, application, storage and management layers indicating failures or errors. Machine analysis and understanding of this data is becoming an important part of debugging, performance analysis, root cause analysis and business analysis. In addition to preventing outages, machine data analysis can also provide insights for fraud detection, customer retention and other important use cases.

Market experts and leading analyst firms predict that we’ll see the number of smart connected things grow from ~2B today to over 50B within the coming decade. The introduction of these new smart, connected things enable functional variability to shift from the physical design to the digital smarts that are being embedded in the “thing”. This explosion of smart, connected things provides both their creators and users (consumers and enterprises) with endless opportunities to continually monetize features, options, usage and data over the lifetime of the “thing’s” operation. Come to this session and see how PTC and Zuora are helping businesses capitalize on these important new revenue streams through a live demo.

Techniques to optimize the pagerank algorithm usually fall in two categories. One is to try reducing the work per iteration, and the other is to try reducing the number of iterations. These goals are often at odds with one another. Skipping computation on vertices which have already converged has the potential to save iteration time. Skipping in-identical vertices, with the same in-links, helps reduce duplicate computations and thus could help reduce iteration time. Road networks often have chains which can be short-circuited before pagerank computation to improve performance. Final ranks of chain nodes can be easily calculated. This could reduce both the iteration time, and the number of iterations. If a graph has no dangling nodes, pagerank of each strongly connected component can be computed in topological order. This could help reduce the iteration time, no. of iterations, and also enable multi-iteration concurrency in pagerank computation. The combination of all of the above methods is the STICD algorithm. [sticd] For dynamic graphs, unchanged components whose ranks are unaffected can be skipped altogether.
Levelwise PageRank with Loop-Based Dead End Handling Strategy : SHORT REPORT ...Subhajit Sahu
Abstract — Levelwise PageRank is an alternative method of PageRank computation which decomposes the input graph into a directed acyclic block-graph of strongly connected components, and processes them in topological order, one level at a time. This enables calculation for ranks in a distributed fashion without per-iteration communication, unlike the standard method where all vertices are processed in each iteration. It however comes with a precondition of the absence of dead ends in the input graph. Here, the native non-distributed performance of Levelwise PageRank was compared against Monolithic PageRank on a CPU as well as a GPU. To ensure a fair comparison, Monolithic PageRank was also performed on a graph where vertices were split by components. Results indicate that Levelwise PageRank is about as fast as Monolithic PageRank on the CPU, but quite a bit slower on the GPU. Slowdown on the GPU is likely caused by a large submission of small workloads, and expected to be non-issue when the computation is performed on massive graphs.
