A new particle detector called the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS-2) was launched to the International Space Station to help solve two cosmic mysteries. The detector will search for antimatter and clues about dark matter by analyzing cosmic rays. It aims to take an inventory of antimatter in space and detect the particle debris from dark matter annihilations. While it may not solve the mysteries, the data could rule out theories. Even failure would provide valuable scientific insight, more so than previous trivial experiments on the space station.
