Dario Fo is an Italian actor, playwright, comedian, singer, theatre director, and political activist who was awarded the 1997 Nobel Prize in Literature. Known for his improvisational style and recovery of medieval performance forms, Fo's plays have been translated into 30 languages and performed worldwide. His work from the 1960s to 1980s criticized assassinations, corruption, racism, and war. He later lampooned Italian politician Silvio Berlusconi and supported the anti-establishment Five Star Movement. Fo's acclaimed solo piece "Mistero Buffo" is recognized as one of the most popular and controversial postwar European theatre spectacles.
