EWRT 211
Day 18
Prepping for In-class Essay (Paper 5)
Paper 4: What you can learn from it.
 Be specific in your thesis statement.
Don’t say “I’m marginalized.” Say
“I’m marginalized by my accent.”
 If you say something in your thesis
statement, you have to address it in
your body paragraphs.
 If the assignment asks you to focus
on one marginalization and one
privilege, then focus on ONE of each.
Do not try to talk about more than
one.
 Make sure each body paragraph
focuses on one point each.
 Set yourself up for success by having
the right number of quotes on your
outline and correct MLA citation
style.
 No extra info on your outline, please.
Portfolio Preview
 Your portfolio is due on the final
day of class: Wed., December 6.
 It will include:
 1. Either Paper 4 or Paper 5 (your
best in-class essay). As-is (not
revised.) DO NOT LOSE THESE or
you are going to have a problem.
 2. A revised, clean copy of Paper 2
or Paper 3 that deals with ALL of
the edits/revisions that I
requested. You should start on this
over Thanksgiving break.
 3. Paper 6 (which we will discuss
next Wednesday).
Review: What is Paper 5?
Introduction
--Introduce the concepts of marginalization and privilege.
--Define them in your own words.
--Mention some marginalization and privileges you have experienced.
Your refined thesis: How you are in the margins and how you are privileged. What is
the outcome on you as a person?
Body Paragraph 1
--how are you privileged or marginalized?
--1-2 examples from your own life.
Body Paragraph 2
--how you are privileged or marginalized?
--1-2 examples from your own life.
Body Paragraph 3
--how have you responded to that privilege or marginalization?
--Do you see your responses as productive? Fair? Compassionate? How or why?
Conclusion
--discuss how your exploration of your own marginalization and privilege relates
to your life and your future. What have you learned from this essay?
BODY Paragraphs must contain:
--At least 3 examples from your
own life.
--At least one quotation from
some source.
--A counterargument.
Two Outlines
I want you to create two outlines: one for today and one for
Monday.
What I want to see today:
 Your thesis statement:
How you are in the margins and how
you are privileged. What is the
outcome on you as a person?
 An outline for each of 3 body
paragraphs:
 What experiences will you discuss in
which body paragraph?
 What is your quote? Where will you
use it?
 What is your counterargument?
Where does it go?
 What will you say in your conclusion?
What you can bring on Monday:
 ONE or TWO SENTENCES that is your
thesis statement. (No longer.)
 ONE quotation with accurate MLA
citation.
 For each of your three personal
experiences, you can write ONE
SENTENCE to remind you of that
experience.
 ONE SENTENCE that reminds you of your
counterargument.
 I suggest putting these in the order that
you want to write about them.
Homework for Monday
 Bring a blue book.
 Complete the Homework Discussion
(which will ask you to post your
outline).
 Bring a printed or handwritten
outline that conforms specifically
to the guidelines (see previous
slide). NO EXTRA INFO is allowed
on the outline.
 Decide whether you want to revise
Paper 2 or Paper 3 for your
portfolio. Start revising.
 Rest a little. Eat a lot.

D18-EWRT 211

  • 1. EWRT 211 Day 18 Prepping for In-class Essay (Paper 5)
  • 2. Paper 4: What you can learn from it.  Be specific in your thesis statement. Don’t say “I’m marginalized.” Say “I’m marginalized by my accent.”  If you say something in your thesis statement, you have to address it in your body paragraphs.  If the assignment asks you to focus on one marginalization and one privilege, then focus on ONE of each. Do not try to talk about more than one.  Make sure each body paragraph focuses on one point each.  Set yourself up for success by having the right number of quotes on your outline and correct MLA citation style.  No extra info on your outline, please.
  • 3. Portfolio Preview  Your portfolio is due on the final day of class: Wed., December 6.  It will include:  1. Either Paper 4 or Paper 5 (your best in-class essay). As-is (not revised.) DO NOT LOSE THESE or you are going to have a problem.  2. A revised, clean copy of Paper 2 or Paper 3 that deals with ALL of the edits/revisions that I requested. You should start on this over Thanksgiving break.  3. Paper 6 (which we will discuss next Wednesday).
  • 4. Review: What is Paper 5? Introduction --Introduce the concepts of marginalization and privilege. --Define them in your own words. --Mention some marginalization and privileges you have experienced. Your refined thesis: How you are in the margins and how you are privileged. What is the outcome on you as a person? Body Paragraph 1 --how are you privileged or marginalized? --1-2 examples from your own life. Body Paragraph 2 --how you are privileged or marginalized? --1-2 examples from your own life. Body Paragraph 3 --how have you responded to that privilege or marginalization? --Do you see your responses as productive? Fair? Compassionate? How or why? Conclusion --discuss how your exploration of your own marginalization and privilege relates to your life and your future. What have you learned from this essay? BODY Paragraphs must contain: --At least 3 examples from your own life. --At least one quotation from some source. --A counterargument.
  • 5. Two Outlines I want you to create two outlines: one for today and one for Monday. What I want to see today:  Your thesis statement: How you are in the margins and how you are privileged. What is the outcome on you as a person?  An outline for each of 3 body paragraphs:  What experiences will you discuss in which body paragraph?  What is your quote? Where will you use it?  What is your counterargument? Where does it go?  What will you say in your conclusion? What you can bring on Monday:  ONE or TWO SENTENCES that is your thesis statement. (No longer.)  ONE quotation with accurate MLA citation.  For each of your three personal experiences, you can write ONE SENTENCE to remind you of that experience.  ONE SENTENCE that reminds you of your counterargument.  I suggest putting these in the order that you want to write about them.
  • 6. Homework for Monday  Bring a blue book.  Complete the Homework Discussion (which will ask you to post your outline).  Bring a printed or handwritten outline that conforms specifically to the guidelines (see previous slide). NO EXTRA INFO is allowed on the outline.  Decide whether you want to revise Paper 2 or Paper 3 for your portfolio. Start revising.  Rest a little. Eat a lot.
