A presentation I gave at JALT and ETJ about integrating virtual worlds into higher edcation language learning. A step by step approach. Mike McKay - Mukogawa Women's University
- Data monitoring committees (DMCs) emerged in the 1970s to periodically review accumulating clinical trial data and monitor safety and efficacy. They issue judgments to stop or continue trials.
- DMCs have become reflexive institutions that engage in endogenous critical inquiry. They focus on issues like membership qualifications and attributes, and how much trials can be redefined based on interim data.
- Guidelines have been issued to provide standards around DMC roles, structures, and decision-making processes. There is debate around how independent DMCs should be and what level of access they should have to trial data and ability to influence trial parameters.

Bloom Filter Based Routing for Content-Based Publish/SubscribeZbigniew Jerzak
Achieving expressive and efficient content-based
routing in publish/subscribe systems is a difficult problem. Traditional
approaches prove to be either inefficient or severely limited in their
expressiveness and flexibility. We present a novel routing method, based on
Bloom filters, which shows high efficiency while simultaneously preserving
the flexibility of content-based schemes. The resulting implementation is a
fast, flexible and fully decoupled content-based publish/subscribe system.

Presentation about learning English in the virtual world of Second Life. A proven way to help motivate learners and create immersive learning opportunities.
I did a Pecha Kucha in Second Life and then did a Pecha Kucha about doing a Pecha Kucha in Second Life in real life. That's a lot of Pecha Kuchas.
My approach was to describe a class project. Students are told they are world reporters and have to go somewhere in the world. When they return they will give us a presentation on w...hat they saw. In this particular assignment they need to tell us in 10 slides, each timed for 20 seconds, what they were thinking when they took the shot.
The next part of the presentation was showing how this could be done in a virtual world where students could share with other people from around the world. I described Cypris Chat and Cypris Society as well. It turned out to be quite entertaining I think.

7. Principle #1 Share After joining our community, members should find ways to share what they have learned or done in Second Life. Tell us where you have been, what you have seen. Show us your safe toys, clothes, avatars and gadgets. Sharing promotes communication.
8. Principle #2 Respect Second Life is very different from real life, but it is real for many of us. We all come from different cultures, different backgrounds and with different reasons for spending time in SL. We might not understand each other but we both have the same goal, to learn or teach.
9. Principle #3 Respond Let us know what you think about Cypris. Help us make this community a better place for you. Your feedback is what makes Cypris so great. Your opinion matters the most. Help each other with learner/teacher feedback. Communicate mistakes and successes.
10. Principle #4 Be Active Speak. Talk. Ask questions. Say something. We are not passive learners, we are active! In order to improve, we must practice. To practice we must participate. To participate we must SPEAK! Less text chat and more voice chat. We are here to help our members improve their ability to communicate in English.
