Welsh partners collaborated on a project to crowdsource the transcription of historic place names from Ordnance Survey maps of Wales from the late 19th century. The project, Cymru1900wales.org, launched in 2013 and involved over 300 volunteers who transcribed nearly 300,000 place names. This data was later used to develop the statutory List of Historic Place Names of Wales, launched in 2017, which aims to promote awareness of Welsh historic place names and support their use and preservation.
