  • Thanks, First of all I would like to thanks to Robert Gittins and Karen Padmore for give me the oportunitu to presetn our work in the virtual recontrution ot the portico de la gloria.
  • It was one of the most important  Christian pilgrimages  
  • Santiago de Compostela, a city in Galicia, at north-west of Spain. It is a famous Christian pilgrim’s spot since the Middle Ages for the Santiago Rout. One distinctive element of the liturgy of the cathedral is the use of a giant censer called “O Botafumeiro”. Like another censer it was basically used for the hygienic reason . its weight is around 53 kilograms and height is around 150 cm. The Botafumerio is tied to a rope that hangs from the centre of the arms of the cathedral, and it is pulled through the transept of the cathedral describing, basically, in a pendulum movement. The rope is around 20m and the speed of the movement can be around 70km/h
  • Tiraboleiro: is a latin word that mean producer-carrier the censer. In our case “Os Tiraboleiros” is a team of 12 men who pulls the supporting rope of the botafumeiro in a pumping cycle. This pumping process transforms the pendulum motion into variable length pendulum motion increasing the energy of the system in every cycle, and therefore the angle of oscillation. The team is leadered and coordinated by the Tiraboleiros Chef Armando Raposo The chef mark when the team must pull up and down the censer.
  • In this video shows the botafumerio working. At the present time, the chief of the Tiraboleiros starts the liturgy pushing the Botafumeiro to its initial oscillation (13º approximately) From that moment, the Tiraboleiros increase the energy cyclically by increasing and decreasing the length of the rope at the highest and lowest points of oscillation. There are severe curiosities about the botafumeiro, like the rope brook when the Queen Catalina de Aragon visited the Cathedral or the botafumeiro was stolen by Napoleon and so on.
  • The goal of this work is to develop a simulator of this liturgy where the users can be a virtual tiraboleiros . The simulator has solve two main issues : One is the Visualization of the environment of the cathedral and the censer and the other is the hand interaction with it. These problems can be subdivided in: Solving the physical dynamics of the Botafumerio. The visualization of a virtual model of the Cathedral of Santiago Developing an interface (HCI) to simulate the pumping process of the tiraboleiros
  • Mathematically The movement of the botafumeniro is a Pumpig parametric amplification of a pendulum movement. It presents nolinear equation with a complex analytical solution obtained its first aproximation the last century. The “traditional resolution” is obtained by observation and maximize the energy transfer to the censer. In this way The censer can be pull to a maximun angle of 82 degress in 17 pumping cycles The mathematical solution has this form. And if we analyzed the equation the mathematical pumping process is the same than the obtained by tradition.
  • The visualization system is a Nave architecture or a Cave like system architecure. NAVE is a three-screen environment. The screens are positioned at 120  of angles to each other, producing a three-sided display area. The user is positioned in the pumping place. The scene is generated by a cluster of three PC’s in a server/client architecture. The image for each screen (three) is generated on a PC and projected. One of th PC´s called the server, coordinates the system, and management of the interface with the user.
  • The software used is a custom engine called LAB is support opengl2.1 and DirectX 9. The catedral model is developed by blue prinsts and digital pictures in a model of 1 million of poligons with a 1Gb of texture. The smoke of the censer has been developed by a especiar shader.
  • The interface has to support more than 50.000 visitors per year. For this reason we choose an industrial hydraulic system. It allows that four users pull the ropes together like the tiraboleiros team. (Here we have the Rector of the University with the Head of the Galician autonomy governement.)
