CYCL NES
ABOUT CYCLONE
CYCLONE REFERS TO ANY SPINNING STORM THAT
ROTATES AROUND A LOW-PRESSURE CENTRE. THE
LOW-PRESSURE CENTRE IS ALSO REFERRED TO AS THE
'EYE' OF THE STORM, WHICH IS WELL KNOWN FOR
BEING EERILY CALM COMPARED WITH THE AREAS
UNDER THE SPINNING 'ARMS' OF THE STORM. YOU
COULD SAY THAT THE EYE IS WATCHING WHAT'S
GOING ON DOWN BELOW, SO IT NEEDS A CLEAR PATH,
BUT THE ARMS ARE WHERE ALL THE ACTION HAPPENS
BECAUSE THIS IS WHERE THE STORM IS THROWING OUT
ALL OF ITS RAIN AND WIND.
TYPES OF CYCLONES
• TROPICAL CYCLONES ARE WHAT MOST PEOPLE ARE FAMILIAR WITH BECAUSE THESE ARE
CYCLONES THAT OCCUR OVER TROPICAL OCEAN REGIONS. HURRICANES AND TYPHOONS ARE
ACTUALLY TYPES OF TROPICAL CYCLONES, BUT THEY HAVE DIFFERENT NAMES SO THAT IT'S
CLEAR WHERE THAT STORM IS OCCURRING. TROPICAL CYCLONES BASED ON THEIR WIND
SPEEDS ARE CALLED IN CATEGORY 1, 2, 3, 4 OR 5,
• POLAR CYCLONES ARE CYCLONES THAT OCCUR IN POLAR REGIONS LIKE GREENLAND, SIBERIA
AND ANTARCTICA. UNLIKE TROPICAL CYCLONES, POLAR CYCLONES ARE USUALLY STRONGER
IN WINTER MONTHS.
• A MESOCYCLONE IS WHEN PART OF A THUNDERSTORM CLOUD STARTS TO SPIN, WHICH MAY
EVENTUALLY LEAD TO A TORNADO. TORNADOES ALL COME FROM THUNDERSTORM CLOUDS,
BUT NOT ALL THUNDERSTORM CLOUDS MAKE TORNADOES.
EFFECTS OF CYCLONE
• I. TROPICAL CYCLONES CAUSE HEAVY RAINFALL AND LANDSLIDES.
• II. THEY CAUSE A LOT OF HARM TO TOWNS AND VILLAGES, CAUSING SEVERE DAMAGE TO KUCCHA HOUSES.
COASTAL BUSINESSES LIKE SHIPYARDS AND OIL WELLS ARE DESTROYED.
• III. THEY HARM THE ECOSYSTEM OF THE SURROUNDING REGION.
• V. CYCLONES CAUSE HEAVY RAINFALL AND LANDSLIDES.
• IV. CIVIC FACILITIES ARE DISTURBED.
• V. AGRICULTURAL LAND IS SEVERELY AFFECTED, ESPECIALLY IN TERMS OF WATER SUPPLY AND SOIL EROSION.
• VI. IT CAUSES HARM TO HUMAN, PLANT AND ANIMAL LIFE.
• VII. COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS ARE BADLY AFFECTED DUE TO CYCLONES.
IMPACT OF CYCLONES IN INDIA
INDIA IS HIGHLY VULNERABLE TO NATURAL HAZARDS . INDIAN SUB-CONTINENT IS
THE WORST AFFECTED REGION OF THE WORLD, HAVING A COAST LINE OF 7516
KMS. (5400 KMS ALONG THE MAINLAND, 132 KMS IN LAKSHADWEEP AND 1900
KMS IN ANDAMAN AND NICOBAR ISLANDS) IS EXPOSED TO NEARLY 10% OF THE
WORLD’S TROPICAL CYCLONES. CYCLONES OCCUR IN THE MONTH OF MAY-JUNE
AND OCTOBER-NOVEMBER, WITH PRIMARY PEAK IN NOVEMBER AND SECONDARY
PEAK IN MAY. ALTHOUGH CYCLONES AFFECT THE ENTIRE COAST OF INDIA THE
EAST COAST IS MORE PRONE COMPARED TO THE WEST COAST.
• CYCLONE HUDHUD: THE LAST TIME A CYCLONE OF VARDAH'S SCALE BREACHED
FROM THE BAY OF BENGAL WAS IN OCTOBER 2014 WHEN CYCLONE HUDHUD
ORIGINATED FROM THE ANDAMAN ISLANDS AND SNOWBALLED INTO A
CATEGORY IV CYCLONE, BEING DUBBED AS 'EXTREMELY SEVERE.' IT PROCEEDED
TO HIT THE INDIAN STATES OF ANDHRA PRADESH, CHATTISGARH, MADHYA
PRADESH, ODISHA. THE ESTIMATED DAMAGES WERE APPROXIMATED TO A
TOTAL OF USD 3.4 BILLION.
