 Composed of physical conditions such as office temperature or equipments like
personal computers.
 Also related to factors such as work processes or procedures.
 A belief that work is good, enhances character, and is a large part of personal
success.
 Positive work ethic: Received perfect attendance award five years in a row
 Negative work ethic: Gossip-poor work environment and lowers productivity.
 Employees excessively surf the internet during work hours for non-work
related activities.
 Wasting of time and company resources by entertaining oneself on the
internet instead of working.
 Employee’s cheat at work that causes an
alarming financial loss.
 Common forms of cyber-loafing are checking
personal email, using social media, playing games,
watching videos, online shopping, finding new job.
 According to study by kansas state university between 60% to 80% of
employees cyberloaf.
 77% of engaged women use work hours to plan their weddings.
 77% check their social media profiles from work computers.
 40% of productivity losses from non work
related internet surfing.
 Every year each user is costing his company
nearly $4,500 due to cyberloaf.
 An internet presence in the workplace is the main facilitator.
 Dissatisfaction with one’s job, lack of sleep can lead to an increase in
Cyberloafing behaviors.
 Most Cyberloafing occurs in an attempt to regulate the work life balance.
 Other factors of Cyberloafing includes:
 Stress
 Boredom and procrastination
 Job related factors such as Job Attitude, Job Monotony, Job Involvement,
Organizational Justice.
 Behaviors those violate organizational norms, policies or internal rules.
 Intentional desire to cause harm to an organization/workplace.
 Examples of Deviant work behavior includes:
 Making the work environment dirty, using company phone for personal use.
 Cyberloafing demands high self control and regulation among the employees.
 If some tools are available for self regulation, probability of employees
involved in cyberloafing would also be affected.
 Functions as an office toy that offers employees temporary respite
from work demands, a buffer against work stress.
 Taking periodic breaks are important.
 Studies suggests individual with low confidence and high anxiety in
internet will engage in less internet use.
 Women will perceive cyberloafing to an unproductive activity which
interferes with work.
 Men perceive cyberloafing as enjoyable
 Findings revealed cyberloafing has positive impact on work.
 Casual internet browsing develop skills that can be used by company.
 Frequent internet activities during work hours have more job satisfaction.
 Use of computers for online fun and playing online games increases learning and
use of computer application.
 Public communication online on company time leads internet abuse in workplace.
 Declines productivity, costs to company and time loss.
 Vulnerability to security, violation of privacy, employee internet abuse.
 Introducing policy for internet usage, training the employees on policy, monitoring
the breach of policy, taking action on detection of a breach.
 If company makes decisions ethically, less likely to cause harm to the
organization.
 Allot a specific amount of time for employees to use internet.
 Enforcement through punishments.
 Put internet monitoring systems.
 Blocking specific websites.
 Use of internet is growing day by day, its effect on peoples job is
challenging for managers.
 Managers need to understand the reason for cyberloafing and it should not
become counterproductive to organization.
 Organizations must discourage employees from cyberloafing.
 Further areas of research should include psychological experiments,
empirical analyses of end user behavior.
 Design appropriate policies on how it should be controlled or accommodated
in the workplace.

  • 9.  Introducing policy for internet usage, training the employees on policy, monitoring the breach of policy, taking action on detection of a breach.  If company makes decisions ethically, less likely to cause harm to the organization.  Allot a specific amount of time for employees to use internet.  Enforcement through punishments.  Put internet monitoring systems.  Blocking specific websites.
  • 10.  Use of internet is growing day by day, its effect on peoples job is challenging for managers.  Managers need to understand the reason for cyberloafing and it should not become counterproductive to organization.  Organizations must discourage employees from cyberloafing.  Further areas of research should include psychological experiments, empirical analyses of end user behavior.  Design appropriate policies on how it should be controlled or accommodated in the workplace.
