The COVID-19 pandemic has escalated dramatically in the span of just a few months into the worst health
crisis of the twenty-first century (Bandyopadhyay 2020). According to the World Health Organization
(WHO 2020), the disease has now infected more than 7 million people and killed over 400,000 victims
worldwide. The USA, Brazil, Mexico, Spain, Italy, Germany, France, the UK, China, Iran, and Turkey have been
hit particularly hard. In contrast, some smaller countries, such as Taiwan, Singapore, and New Zealand, have
demonstrated relatively successful control safety measures. The situation in highly populated developing
countries (e.g., India) and regions (e.g., Southeast Asia) is still unfolding and uncertain.
The pandemic has adverse implications on international progress toward most of the Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs). Ferguson et al. (2020) reported simulations showing that the COVID-19 pandemic,
left unchecked, can rapidly overwhelm the healthcare systems of even affluent countries. They also showed how
aggressive suppression measuresâi.e., lockdowns with stringent restrictions on the mobility of the publicâcan
delay the progress of the pandemic to minimize the strain on healthcare capacity. Numerous countries
responded by imposing lockdowns and other nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) to âflatten the curveâ and
spread out COVID-19 cases over a more extended period (Ferguson et al. 2020).

Sensory imagery is a literary device writers employ to engage a
readerâs mind on multiple levels. Sensory imagery explores the
five human senses: sight, sound, taste, touch, and smell.
These add depth of detail to writing.

âI went to the store and bought some flowers. Then I headed to the meat
department.
Later I realized I forgot to buy bread.â Now, this doesnât give an impact on
you. Thereâs nothing to bring you into the writerâs world.
âUpon entering the grocery store, I headed directly for the flower
department, where I spotted colorful daisies. As I tenderly rested the daisies
in my rusty shopping cart, I caught a familiar enchanted scent, so I added the
fragrant bouquet of roses to my cart. While heading for the meat department,
I smelled the stinky of seafood, which made my appetite disappear. Later I
realized I forgot to buy bread. â

The sweet smell of chocolates seems to call me in the
evening. The attraction of its delectable taste is really hard
to resist. When the temptation is too much to handle, I tip-
toe into the kitchen, past the photos of colorful flowers
hanging on the wall and over the cracking sounds of the
hardwood floors. The sight of those beautifullyrounded
chocolates only increases the fast beating of my heart and
salivating in my mouth. The taste of its delectable, melting
goodness on my tongue causes all my senses to celebrate.

ď Sight â Many students rely heavily on what is seen. This is important,
as sight is one of our most important senses when developing a story.
However, it is not the only sense with which we can take in
information.
ď What do you feel? Using the sense of touch can add impact to your
story.
ď What do you hear? Using the sense of hearing can add dramatically to
your story.
ď What do you smell? Using the sense of smell can add to the
atmosphere of your story.

These are the key points discussed in this lesson:
1. Creative writing is written mainly to entertain with the creativity of the
mind.
2. Technical writing is written mainly to inform in a formal manner or to incite
the reader to make an action such as purchase the writerâs product.
3. Sensory details include sight, sound, touch, smell and taste.
4. Another note about sensory details, thereâs no one sense thatâs more
important than the other. It all depends on the scene you are trying to
create. However, the sight sense is a common feature in vivid writing.

Editor's Notes
It's the "art of making things up" or putting a creative splash on history, as in creative nonfiction. In any instance, creative writing makes you step out of reality and into a new realm inspired by your own imagination. With creative writing you're able to express feelings and emotions instead of cold, hard facts, as you would in academic writing.
It has an ability to describe the world through an honest and unfiltered lens. Anyone who engages in creative writing, no matter the genre or style, helps us explore the human experience, share new ideas, and advocate for a better society.
Creative writing is an expressive form of literature; one which demands you to use your own creativity, imagination and story to portray a particular message, emotion, or plot. It defies the traditional bounds of other forms of writing and is completely subjective to our own preferences and experiences.
Writing down and performing your thoughts can serve to transform the intangibility of your emotions and experiences into something more. They serve as a way for you to make your feelings tangible and real.
Mention the origin of writing and launching of creative writingâŚa little background of The Odyssey and the tales of the Norse gods
