COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

2. ASSET BASED COMMUNITY
DEVELOPMENT
● According to John McKnight, asset based
community development (ABCD) is:
Building a
community
around the
specific gifts and
talents of its
members!
3. OUR GIFTS ARE VALUABLE
● The time when our gifts become the most
valuable is when they are connected to others
● Making connections is the basic tool for
building a community
FRIENDSHIP
TEAMWORK
GROUP IDEAS
CLUBS
PARTNERSHIPS
NEIGHBORS
ORGANIZATIONS
ASSOCIATIONS
4. ABCD MODEL IN GLOBAL
BRIGADES
● In my opinion, Global Brigades uses this model
on a small scale, but in a number of ways:
NATIVE DOCTORS USED THEIR
MEDICAL KNOWLEDGE TO HELP
AT OUR CLINIC
GLOBAL BRIGADES REPRESENTATIVES
PAIRED OUR BRIGADE WITH
A COMMUNITY
AT OUR COOKS BUNKERS, PREPARED GB
OUR
OUR PANAMANIAN DELICIOUS CONTACT
MEALS
SET UP OUR STAY
A lot of organization had to be done to make the trip a
success, and Global Brigades used different gifts from
different people to make things run smoothly.
5. HANDS, HEAD, AND
HEART
● McKnight mentions that we have different gifts.
● Gifts of the hands: What do we know about
doing things?
● Gifts of the head: What do we know about?
How are we able to see things in different
ways?
● Gifts of the heart: What do we care about?
6. A GIFT OF THE HEART
● Gifts of the heart stood out to me because our
team all had the same gift of the heart:

WE CARED ABOUT MAKING A DIFFERENCE
7. OTHER GIFTS WE
BROUGHT Doctors brought
their medical
knowledge and
talents
Some brigaders
brought their
Spanish-speaking
abilities
We brought
our gifts of
positive
attitudes
Our leaders
used their gifts
of leadership to
make the trip a
success
Some people
had the gift of
being great with
kids
Some brigaders had
excellent non-verbal
communication skills
which were
necessary due to the
language barrier
8. CONNECTORS AND
LEADERS
● LEADERS= the
community's voice
● CONNECTORS= seek to
join others together; they
believe in and see the “full
half” in others
I identify as a connector. I would
rather help someone implement their
ideas than lead an entire group of
people based solely on my own
ideas. I like to see the best in people
and offer encouragement.
9. ASSETS OF THE COMMUNITY
(SAGREJA, PANAMA)
One woman was
talented at
weaving hats
Families had good
knowledge of growing
crops
One father had built his
family's house out of clay
with his bare hands
Children were learning colors and
other simple words in english
A few of the kids were
amazing soccer players
10. GIFTS CORRELATE TO
NEEDS
● The gifts and assets of the Sagreja community correlate to
their needs in a few ways. Their knowledge of things that
they depend on for income (such as hat weaving) are
examples of how impoverished they are.
● The fact that a father had to build his home out of clay and
sticks shows his family's need for money and a safer,
better constructed house.
● The knowledge they have to grow crops is wonderful, but
at the same time shows their poverty because there are no
grocery stores nearby- assuming they could afford to buy
lots of food, which is not the case.
11. THE EDGE OF THE
COMMUNITY
● McKnight says we need to be mindful and especially
focused on those who are on the edge of our
communities or neighborhoods.
● Those on the edge: Have gifts to share, too!
May be left out because of a
disability or a problem.
Need an invite into the
community.
Are important because they
need our gifts and we need
theirs!
May be viewed by their “half empty” self.
INVITATION, PARTICIPATION, and
COMMUNICATION are important for all!!
12. WE ARE ON THE RIGHT
PATH
● McKnight says we are on the way to building
great communities when are gifts are valued
“There are no strangers here, just friends we haven't met.”
