Role of information technology in solving environmental problems in lagos, ni...Alexander Decker
The document discusses the role of information technology in solving environmental problems in Lagos, Nigeria. It finds that while IT is currently underutilized, it has potential to effectively manage and predict environmental issues when fully applied. The major environmental problems in Lagos are solid waste, noise and air pollution, water contamination, and poor housing conditions, caused by urbanization and population growth. These negatively impact habitat and public health. While agencies employ some IT tools like GPS, GIS and air monitoring stations, further investment and training are needed to optimize use of technologies like remote sensing, modeling and public access to data. The document promotes increased IT application to facilitate informed decision-making, mitigation efforts, and engagement on sustainability best practices.
Developing a Crime Mapping GIS System For Law Enforcement: A Case Study of Ow...Editor IJCATR
This paper examines the use of GIS in the development of a crime analysis information system for the Nigeria police. In recent times, criminality has been on the increase with criminals using new and more sophisticated ways to commit crime; resulting to fear and restlessness among the citizens. They police have found it difficult to manage and control these crimes largely due to the obsolete methods and resources they employ in doing so. The purpose of this study is to see how the Nigerian Police Force can adopt the use of crime maps in its operations and reap the benefits. The system will help the police in the analysis of crimes which will lead to crime hotspots identification. Using ArcGIS Software 10.0, we created a digital land use map of crime hotspots in the area and a crime-geospatial database. The results of the spatial analysis and a 500m buffering done on the data shows that areas that are more vulnerable to crime, have no police stations situated around them. This study shows that a GIS based Information system will give the police better insights into crime mapping and analysis which will be a tool to help them effectively manage and combat crime. This study recommends full government involvement in the area of human personnel and infrastructure development for the police to effectively change from the traditional to GIS based ways of combating crime.
GIS as Information Technology’s Answer to the Environmental Pollution Problem...Celestine Achi
The document discusses how geographic information systems (GIS) can help address environmental pollution issues in Nigeria's Niger Delta region. It begins by introducing the topic and defining environmental pollution. It then discusses the global effects of pollution and different countries' responses. The author argues that GIS can help monitor, track, and prevent pollution better than traditional reactive approaches. An action plan is proposed that establishes awareness campaigns, adopts technologies like GIS, encourages environmental education, and enforces relevant laws. The conclusion states that GIS can help track, analyze, and predict pollution effects to facilitate proactive responses.

Sedimentation assessment of a small reservoir at afaka forest reserve, kaduna...Alexander Decker
This document summarizes a study assessing sedimentation of a small reservoir in Afaka Forest Reserve, Kaduna, Nigeria. The key findings are:
1. Bathymetric surveys from 2004-2013 showed the reservoir's storage capacity decreased from its initial design capacity of 16,400m3 to 10,665m3, a storage loss of about 35%.
2. A linear relationship between reservoir storage capacity and age established a sedimentation rate of 221m3 per year, meaning the reservoir's storage capacity would be eliminated in 76.5 years without dredging.
3. For economic viability, the study recommends desilting the reservoir every 15 years to remove 3,280m3 of sediment and
