Attractive redesign
Kathleen Almy discusses redesigning the developmental math program at Rock Valley College. The college faced issues like low pass rates and inconsistencies. The redesign focused on expanding options, improving functionality, and getting everyone on the same page. Changes included modular courses, non-STEM alternatives, standardized policies and MyMathLab integration. Assessment shows pass rates increased since the redesign. The redesign respected diverse needs, was flexible yet structured, and aimed to be effective, successful and sustainable over time.

It notes that traditional developmental education sequences have high attrition rates that present structural barriers to students completing college-level courses. The redesign aims to accelerate students through redesigned math and English pathways and integrated support services to help more students successfully complete college-level courses. It outlines the new models for College Composition and Reading courses and soft landing options to better prepare students to retake placement exams. The goal is to reduce time, credits and courses needed in developmental sequences and better support student success in college-level work.

The study examines how these learning modes relate to student performance and dispositions. Key findings include: (1) engagement with tutorials and mastery of content strongly predicts exam scores; (2) students frequently use worked examples and rarely use hints for tutored problem-solving; (3) adaptive dispositions correlate with timely preparation and less example use, while maladaptive dispositions correlate with less preparation and more example use.
