Learning objectives:
1. Be able to use the computer to solve problems at the freshman level, plot data and
equations, analyze data, and make graphical presentations.
2. Be able to learn how to use computer software without extensive instruction
Learning Outcomes1
:
1. Be able to use Excel to [1,4,5,6](1,4):
- Enter data and perform computations on them
- Find solutions, maxima, minima
- Customize plots: fonts, titles, symbols, non-linear axes
- Analyze data using trendline functions on plots and statistical computations
- Perform conditional commands (if, then, else)
2. Be able to use MATLAB to [2,3,4,5,6](1,4):
- Perform computations involving functions
- Solve simultaneous equations
- Plot expressions and equations: multiple curves, non-linear axes, three-dimensional
- Do calculus: derivatives, integrals
- Do repetitive and conditional operations
- Write programs

Evaluation methods (approximate percentages):
1. Hour exam 1: 12.5% (tentatively February 9 in lecture)
2. Hour exam 2: 12.5% (tentatively March 29 in lecture)
3. Final exam: 25% (oral, by appointment)
4. Homework: 20%
5. Computer lab: 25%
6. Attendance and quizzes: 5%
