Area Trainer / Quality Monitor – Training volunteers and assessing volunteer trainers.
Full-time mobile trainer/tutor/assessor, and training quality-monitor, working to NVQ standards, mainly training volunteers
and inducting new staff. Volunteers can be of any age and background including KS4 & 5 school students, and adults.
2. Also involved in identifying / training new tutors / trainers from volunteer pool, encouraging volunteers to develop their roles
according to their skills. The courses delivered included Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults and Children & Young People,
including giving the volunteers an overview of the relevant law, policies, and the organisation’s best practice in reporting.
British Red Cross also operates an APEL policy (Accreditation of Prior Experience & Learning) where this can be applied to
individuals. I was self-supervising when my manager left in April prior to a National re-structuring exercise, until July. Also
delivered a basic skills first-aid course to those staff and volunteers who do not require a full four-day certificate for their
roles, and facilitate ‘Welcome Workshops’ and workshops on Risk Assessment, Safe Handling and Lone Working &
Personal Safety (RoSPA course). Working with volunteer coordinators and service managers to identify gaps / needs, and
deliver training required within policy and time-limits. Consolidating and developing training materials and activities.
Reviewing and improving record-keeping systems and course booking procedures, and being aware of the varying needs
and diversity of the trainees. Proposed a number of ways to overhaul and manage internal training in the Area.

Department raised the GCSE pass rate from 27% to 45% in two years – in relatively difficult and low-achieving
school (Ely); by matching courses and assessment types to the pupils’ needs & working with disaffected students.
Re-wrote the age 11 to 14 course, purchased new materials. Introduced modular basic skills course for lower
attaining students and out of classroom activities. Communicating with parents, managing data etc.
Improved health and safety culture in the department; trained as ‘A’ – Level exam question moderator (OCR).
Client-facing experience by phone and face to face dealing with enquiries from parents and other departments,
compiling reports and team summaries, and handling large volumes of statistical and value-added data in Excel.

correct samples taken for QC laboratory, etc. Included project work on new methods, preparing data for reports, and
experience in customer service, use of I.T., process control and food/drink safety as well as training new entrants.

As Chair of the YHA National Local Groups’ Committee, I was tasked with negotiating with the association’s 70+ local
groups that they should become formally part of the association, for reasons of (then current) charity legislation (now
reversed ). This involved working with co-volunteers to persuade groups to adopt a standard constitution, or parts thereof,
reassuring them of the benefits of doing this, negotiating concessions from the parent body, and organising and chairing a
100-delegate conference. I had control over committee budget, and wrote and edited articles for a newsletter.
I also have customer-facing experience as a volunteer youth hostel warden (site manager) from 1984 to 2011, including
dealing sensitively with difficult individuals and emergency situations, general customer care (for which I have a Welcome
Host certificate), health and safety, cleaning/maintenance, taking bookings, cash handling, greeting and checking customers
in on arrival, room allocations, generating & selling room - upgrades, supervising others (e.g. a casual member of staff) and
maintaining stock availability (e.g. clean laundry and food supplies). I have also prepared breakfasts and packed lunches to
order, and managed hand-over to next volunteer. Usually unsupervised or telephone supervision remotely, working on my
own initiative and problem-solving on-site. Been involved in the induction of new volunteers & co-wrote training manual.
Also trained and mentored new volunteers to the organisation’s representative democracy structure.
