My work-related history and experience is also the history of my company, embo
systems. I am the sole owner of the company. On the following pages, you will find a
summary of that history.
2. since 1989…
embo systems was formed as a sole
proprietorship in 1992.
Founder Dawie Mostert started his IT career
working on a ZX Spectrum computer 30 years
ago after completing his law degree at the
University of the Free State. After “upgrading”
to PC, he started developing various Health
and Safety Software applications.
Today this pioneering IT solutions company is
still at the forefront of developing new
applications using leading edge technologies.
embo has always been involved in the full spectrum of the software life cycle ie:
The original software was mainly aimed at Health and Safety | Risk Management for all industry
types. The current version is aimed al all database applications requiring an interactive user
interface.

3. application development history
the safety manager
the guardian
emrisk / emres
window media
Developed in 1989, the safety manager was the first known health and
safety software application in South Africa. It addressed the extensive
administrative needs of a structured Health and Safety programme and
based on the Nosa 5-star Safety System [advocated by the non-profit,
state supported, National Occupational Safety Association (NOSA) as it
was known then]. It was sold to various SA companies.
Language: Quicksilver
OS: DOS
the safety manager was re-designed to make it a lot more user-
definable so that any protocol could be used.
It was renamed as the guardian in 1991
Language: Quicksilver
OS: DOS
When Microsoft released their Windows operating System and Office
suite of applications in 1992, Embo Systems decided to go the graphical
route with Windows and the program was again re-designed. It was
developed with a Microsoft Access Front-end and SQL or Access
Database back-end could be used. It was renamed: emrisk. During this
period a Emergency Response program was developed called emres.
Language: VBA
OS: Windows
In 1992 Embo Systems also developed a very successful Law Book
Application called window media. It was an electronic law book systems
with a variety of features – totally unknown back then, even in webpages.
Features like hyperlinks and searching facilities was bleeding edge. Only
later these features became common cause in mark-up languages like
HTML. Embo Systems was the sole supplier of electronic law books to
Lex Patria, a leading publisher of Law Books. When this publisher was
taken over by Lexus Nexus, the range was discontinued.
Language: Logiix
OS: Windows
4. application development history
IRMS2000 / RMS In 1999 the IP in the Emrisk product was bought by GMSI, then a full
subsidiary of AngloGold. The programme’s name was changed to
Irms16 and later Irms2000.
The programme was rolled out to all Anglogold's operations in South
Africa and was used until 2009. I provided a consulting service to
Anglogold via GMSI and later directly to AnglogoldAshanti. Because of
new developments in software technology, AnglogoldAshanti started
developing a new web-based Risk Management application in-house
called RMS. I stayed involved in the research, compiling specifications,
implementation of the new system, as well as developing and
maintaining analysis tools for their risk management data.
This entailed:
• Development of a Risk Management Data
• Warehouse using Microsoft SQL Server
• Development of an elaborate ETL (Extract, Transform and Load)
process extracting the data from the RMS production database into
the Data Warehouse
• Development of Cubes using Microsoft Analysis Services
• Development of User Interface tools to view the analysis in Excel,
Custom .Net applications etc.
I am currently under contract to provide a one day a week service to
AnglogoldAshanti, maintaining the software tools I’ve developed.
embo database application factory [edaf]
embo daf For the past six years I have been developing a software concept, which
I’ve coined the Embo Database Application Factory. This application can
even be used effectively by non-programmers. It is currently in the final
stages of release to market.
