‘THARANTHLOPE’
June - September 1993
Reference: Bruce McFarlane
Position held : Line Producer
Line Producer of a 13 x 26 minute Drama series for CCV TV. Shot in Mamelodi, Pretoria and surrounds.
Responsible for R1 000 000 budget and entire Production office and crew. Also setting up of residential complex
for all crew and cast in Pretoria, as well as construction of several swing sets in a large warehouse.
Directed by Bruce McFarlane and Liam Cundill as first AD.
SAFRITEL / IOI - ‘TROPICAL HEAT’
July 1992 - April 1993
Position held : Production Co-ordinator
Production co-ordinator and personal assistant to the Executive Producer.
Daily co-ordinating of 120 first unit crew (of which 20 were foreigners) and 40 plus 2nd
unit crew (responsible for all
the stunt work). Looking after the Foreign crew’s families and managing all their hotel and travel arrangements.
Completely in charge of all cast, both local and overseas. Flying in on average 5 overseas actors per week,
arranging all work permits, scheduling all transport and chaperones.

units and preparing call-sheets, distribution of all scripts (inclusive of daily re-
writes and updated dialogue), managing all craft & catering, and scheduling transport, unit and location moves.
Overseeing the “Product placement” deal with BMW and scheduling continuity and rotation of these vehicles.
When the crew went twice to Mauritius to shoot the beach bar scenes, organised all carnets, travel and transport
arrangements, hotel accommodation and shipping of gear, art department, vehicles and armoury permits. I twice
co-ordinated this “epic” and both times stayed and ran the Pretoria production office and did all the support and
back up from there.
Co-ordination of every foreign actor who had to be flown out to Mauritius for just one days shoot, from all over
Canada, Usa and the UK.
This was an incredibly intensive production. On average 10 minutes were shot a day - each episode was shot over 5
days in and around Pretoria and the 6th
day was held over for Mauritius. Whilst we were in post production with
the first episode, we would be shooting the 2nd
and prepping the 3rd
. There was only overlap on the 1st
Assistant
Directors not on any of the production staff.
In total 22 one hour episodes were produced. All post production was done in Johannesburg, and as the series had
to be done in NTSC it was an enormously technical post job. It was the first time this had been done in South Africa
and it was also to the best of my knowledge that it was not only shot episodic but in continuity as well.
