This document summarizes a research study that investigated the effect of customers' perceptions on the usage of internet banking in commercial banks in Kenya. Specifically, it examined how prior knowledge of technology affects use of internet banking. The study used a descriptive research design and surveyed 272 customers across 12 commercial banks in Nairobi County. The findings showed that customers' perceptions, including their level of prior technological knowledge, influenced their use of internet banking. Those with less knowledge and experience using computers and the internet were less likely to use internet banking services. The study concluded that customers' perceptions, particularly regarding their familiarity with technology, have an impact on the adoption and continued use of internet banking.

Over the last two decades, the Nigerian banking sector has witnessed some upsurge in the use
of technology for service delivery. However, concerns have been expressed as to whether cost and other
challenges of adopting information technology can be justified by performance. Accordingly, this study sought
to examine the relationship between different e-banking channels and the profitability of organisations in
Nigeria. Four e-banking channels,(automatic teller machines, point of sales, internet banking transactions and
electronic mobile banking) were identified and regressed against return on equity (ROE) of Deposit Money
Banks operating in Nigeria between 2006 and 2016. A panel data regression model was formulated and tested
using the generalized method of moment approach. The result revealed that the overall impact of electronic
banking on profitability of Deposit Money Banks operating in Nigeria was significant and positive. The study
recommends that critical stakeholders and beneficiaries of electronic banking – the government, regulatory
authorities and the banks should collaborate to put in place an enabling operating environment and an effective
regulatory framework to bring about optimal deployment of these services to customers

identify the impact of hypothesis between e-banking system and Iraqi
banks employee perspective. This study was conducted by taking sample
of employee from two biggest public banks in Iraq which are ALRAFIDAIN and AL-RASHEED. A survey through questionnaires on the
website was used as the instrument to collect the data were analyzed
using PLS software. Technology Acceptance model(TAM) as a basic
foundation with independent variables Perceived Usefulness, Perceived
Ease of Use, Perceived IT Beliefs and Task–Technology Fit, Attitude as
Intervening and Intention to Use as dependent variable. The result of
hypothesis analysis reveals that there is a significant impact among all
variables to attitude, but Perceived Ease of Use, it does not apply variable
from those analysis it is depicted that Perceived Ease of Use does not impact to the perception of the implementation of e-banking system in Iraqi banks.

Abstract: The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of mobile banking on customer satisfaction in selected banks in Trans-Nzoia County. The study was guided by the following objectives: -to establish the effect of reliability of mobile banking on customer satisfaction, to determine the effect of responsiveness of mobile banking on customer satisfaction , and to evaluate the effect of accessibility of mobile banking services on customer satisfaction in Trans-Nzoia County. A descriptive survey research design was adopted. The target population was ten selected banks in Trans-Nzoia County. The study was guided by the; innovation diffusion theory, technology acceptance model (TAM), and theory of reasoned action (TRA). The study adopted the descriptive survey research design with the target population being the selected commercial banks personnel in Trans Nzoia County, totaling to 41 respondents. Census method was adopted since the target population was less than the minimum a hundred for sampling to be used for research. A structured questionnaire was used as a data collection instrument that was designed in a Likert scale format. Data analysis was carried out by use of regression and ANOVA using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23 in order to statistically produce the relationship between the independent variables and dependent variable. From the findings, the researcher concluded that the regression effect was statistically significant indicating a reliable prediction of the dependent variable. The F calculated (F =39.96) greater than 5% level of significance thereby showing that the model was significant where the independent variables explained 85% of the mobile banking customer satisfaction. The study was significant to the banking sector since mobile banking is a phenomenon that has taken off and can’t be washed away.

For this reason, several mobile payment trend studies have revealed the potential of mobile network technologies for payment purposes. The main objective of the study was to assess the effect of mobile banking to financial performance of commercial banks in Kisii Town, Kenya. The specific objectives of the study were to evaluate the effect of perceived security of mobile payments technology on financial performance of commercial banks in Kisii Town, to determine the effect of perceived ease of accessibility of mobile payments technology on financial performance of commercial banks in Kisii Town and to determine the effect of transaction cost of mobile payment technology on financial performance of commercial banks in Kisii Town. The study used a sample of 255 respondents which was drawn from Operation Managers, clients, cashiers and 7 M-Pesa paying agents. The data collected were analyzed by use of descriptive statistics and inferential statistics with the help of Social Sciences version 21 software. The study found out that, perceived cost, perceived access and perceived security of mobile payments technology have a significant influence on the financial performance of commercial banks. The study concluded that the transaction cost of mobile payment is cheap, mobile banking money can be sent any time of day; it saves time of travelling and that mobile banking transactions are processed in accordance with clients’ expectations besides providing evident of payment to another person.

This study examined customers' usage of digital banking in Gobichettipalayam, Erode District, Tamil Nadu. A survey was conducted of 100 banking customers to understand their perceptions and factors influencing adoption of digital banking. Results showed that income, education, and age significantly impacted digital banking usage. Customers were motivated by the convenience of 24/7 access, time savings, and ease of use. However, some concerns around security of personal information and safe transactions remained. Overall, customers seemed to be adapting to digital banking despite challenges, with convenience factors being key drivers of popularity and satisfaction.

Abstract: This Study is about the Role of the Neighborhood Watch as a mechanism for crime prevention in the housing area of the Pelangi apartment, George Town, Penang. The purpose of this study is to determine the understanding and the awareness of the residents towards the concept and the roles of the Neighborhood Watch scheme and their participation in order to ensure the personal security and that of the neighbors. In addition to that, the study is also to establish whether the Neighborhood Watch scheme is able to alleviate the fear of crime and to reduce the cases of criminal acts such as house breaking, vandalism, robberies and thefts of personal belongings. Besides, this study is also trying to implement the Neighborhood Watch in the area. The study was completed through a survey method using questionnaires to obtain the relevant data, involving 199 samples of the Pelangi’s apartment residents who were of various ethnic groups. The data was moreover collected from the interviews and study documentation. The data were subsequently analyzed through the Statistical Packages for the Social Sciences using both descriptive as well as the inference statistics. The results of the study showed that there were an understanding and awareness among the residents of the Pelangi apartment about the concept and the roles of the Neighborhood Watch Scheme. The residents also participated in its activities in order to ensure personal security and the security of the neighbors. However, the study also showed that the Neighborhood Watch scheme did not alleviate the fear of crime among the residents and did not reduce the relevant criminal acts of house breaking, vandalism, and personal thefts in the area. The findings of the study also revealed that there was no significant relationship between the implementation of the Neighborhood Watch scheme and the reduction of criminal cases in question.

Abstract: The main objective of this study was to investigate nutrition relationship between pre-school teachers’ nutritional knowledge and practice in Homa Bay County. The study investigated the following aspects of nutrition knowledge; balanced diet, source of nutrients, food preparation, food storage and preservation. The specific objectives were: to assess the nutritional knowledge and practices between pre-school teachers; Jerome Brunner’ (1978) theories on knowledge representation guided the study; his three modes on nutritional knowledge to the teachers and learners basically on cognitive development. The three models are enactive, iconic and symbolic. The study adopted a descriptive design to investigate the relationship between pre-school teachers’ nutritional knowledge and practices. Questionnaire, interview schedule and observation checklists were used as instruments of data collection. Data analysis was done qualitatively and quantitatively methods. Findings showed that nutritional knowledge and practices among preschool teachers is very low in Homa Bay County. Most of the respondents knew about only three food groups type, a significant number of them were unable to categorise different food types in their respective groups. Proper nutrition was found to be positively correlated with preschool children academic performance. The study also established that the relationship between pre- school teachers’ nutritional knowledge and practices was not significant. The study recommends that strategies need to be put in place to improve nutritional knowledge and practices of preschool teachers in Homa Bay County and country at large, this will be through cooperation of Ministry of Education, Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development and other policy makers in the education sector.

Abstract: The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of mobile banking on customer satisfaction in selected banks in Trans-Nzoia County. The study was guided by the following objectives: -to establish the effect of reliability of mobile banking on customer satisfaction, to determine the effect of responsiveness of mobile banking on customer satisfaction , and to evaluate the effect of accessibility of mobile banking services on customer satisfaction in Trans-Nzoia County. A descriptive survey research design was adopted. The target population was ten selected banks in Trans-Nzoia County. The study was guided by the; innovation diffusion theory, technology acceptance model (TAM), and theory of reasoned action (TRA). The study adopted the descriptive survey research design with the target population being the selected commercial banks personnel in Trans Nzoia County, totaling to 41 respondents. Census method was adopted since the target population was less than the minimum a hundred for sampling to be used for research. A structured questionnaire was used as a data collection instrument that was designed in a Likert scale format. Data analysis was carried out by use of regression and ANOVA using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23 in order to statistically produce the relationship between the independent variables and dependent variable. From the findings, the researcher concluded that the regression effect was statistically significant indicating a reliable prediction of the dependent variable. The F calculated (F =39.96) greater than 5% level of significance thereby showing that the model was significant where the independent variables explained 85% of the mobile banking customer satisfaction. The study was significant to the banking sector since mobile banking is a phenomenon that has taken off and can’t be washed away.

For this reason, several mobile payment trend studies have revealed the potential of mobile network technologies for payment purposes. The main objective of the study was to assess the effect of mobile banking to financial performance of commercial banks in Kisii Town, Kenya. The specific objectives of the study were to evaluate the effect of perceived security of mobile payments technology on financial performance of commercial banks in Kisii Town, to determine the effect of perceived ease of accessibility of mobile payments technology on financial performance of commercial banks in Kisii Town and to determine the effect of transaction cost of mobile payment technology on financial performance of commercial banks in Kisii Town. The study used a sample of 255 respondents which was drawn from Operation Managers, clients, cashiers and 7 M-Pesa paying agents. The data collected were analyzed by use of descriptive statistics and inferential statistics with the help of Social Sciences version 21 software. The study found out that, perceived cost, perceived access and perceived security of mobile payments technology have a significant influence on the financial performance of commercial banks. The study concluded that the transaction cost of mobile payment is cheap, mobile banking money can be sent any time of day; it saves time of travelling and that mobile banking transactions are processed in accordance with clients’ expectations besides providing evident of payment to another person.

This study examined customers' usage of digital banking in Gobichettipalayam, Erode District, Tamil Nadu. A survey was conducted of 100 banking customers to understand their perceptions and factors influencing adoption of digital banking. Results showed that income, education, and age significantly impacted digital banking usage. Customers were motivated by the convenience of 24/7 access, time savings, and ease of use. However, some concerns around security of personal information and safe transactions remained. Overall, customers seemed to be adapting to digital banking despite challenges, with convenience factors being key drivers of popularity and satisfaction.

Abstract: Career success is determined by a number of factors, including some combination of specific competencies and a performance record, along with network development, organizational politics, and reputation building. The county government of Uasin Gishu has of late received negative publicity for its policy on career development. Although interpersonal skills have been argued by researchers to demonstrate influence on work and career outcomes, a few attempts have been made to show how interpersonal skills influences these outcomes. This study investigated the relationship between interpersonal skills and career success of employees of Uasin Gishu County. The specific objectives of the study were: To determine the relationship between networking and career success, to establish the relationship between personal promotion and career success, to determine the relationship between impression management and career success, to establish the relationship between use of influence tactics and career success, and to determine whether reputation has any mediating effect on the relationship between interpersonal skills and career success. A case research design was used. Target population was all the employees of Uasin Gishu County government. Stratified ransom sampling and then simple random sampling was used to obtain the respondents for this proposed study. Primary data was collected using standard questionnaires. Interpersonal skills were taken as the independent variable, career success the dependent variable, and reputation as the mediating variable. Reliability was assessed using Cronbach’s alpha and the data was analyzed using SPSS. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data. The study findings showed a significant positive correlation between networking skills and career success (r = .933, p=0.000), impression management and career success (r = .775, p=0.000), self-promotion and career success (r =.933, p=0.000), use of influence tactics and career success (r=.896, p=0.000). Also there was a significant positive correlation between reputation and networking skills (r =.909, p=0.000), impression management (r =829, p=0.000), self-promotion (r=.933, p=0.000), and use of influence tactics(r=.896, p=0.000), (r=.909, p=0.000). The result of the study indicated that networking does not have a significant effect on career success, impression management was found to have a positive significant relationship with career success, and there was no significant effect of use of influence tactics on career success. Reputation was found to partially mediate the relationship between interpersonal skills and career success and hence on the other hand, results indicated that reputation fully mediate the relationship between impression management and career success and hence. It was also found that reputation fully mediated the relationship between self-promotion and career success.

Abstract: Fire disasters have in the recent past increased in frequency complexity, scope and intensity thereby severely disrupting the pace of socio-economic development in the country. The scope, frequency, complexity and destructiveness of fire disaster has increased due to climatic changes, limited capacity among fire emergency responders, lack of awareness, lack of enforcement of the building codes, inadequate response and coordination mechanism and rapid growth of unplanned and uncontrolled settlements among others. The overall objective of this study was to assess fire disaster preparedness in hospitality business premises in Kisumu City. The specific research objective was to: Determine the causes of various types of fire disasters on hospitality businesses in Kisumu City. Both probability and purposive sampling strategies were employed to select a sample size of 86 units from hospitality business personnel, humanitarian organizations and government personnel. Data collection tools included questionnaires, focus group discussions, observation checklists and key informant interviews. Quantitative and qualitative data collected from primary and secondary sources were analyzed both for descriptive and inferential parameters using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS). Chi-square tests were carried out to establish the degree of significance among the variables. The study has revealed that there are various types of hospitality industry players who are at risk of fire disasters. They include hotels, restaurants, bars, shopping malls and night clubs. Firefighting service provision in Kisumu apparently is grossly inadequate operating on weak capacity to sufficiently respond to the needs of hospitality industry in event of fire outbreak. The findings of this study will be used to bolster enforcement of fire safety regulations and ensure unified command structure to enhance effective response to emergencies.

Abstract: Quality of education and retention of learners should be the commitment of every educational system. Yet institutions have their unique characteristics that either facilitate or hinder the achievement of universal primary educational goals. Individual schools therefore initiate their own mechanisms, unique or used by other institutions to ensure quality in schools. The study focused on school based factors influence quality of education in primary schools. This is because much of the research done has focused mainly on the challenges faced by school in addressing Free Primary Education (FPE). The specific objectives of the research were to establish school based factors that influence quality of education in primary schools. The study was conducted in Kakamega North District with head teachers and teachers of all primary schools within the District forming study population. A descriptive survey research design was applied. The respondents were selected using probability sampling techniques. The sample size represented 30% of the total study population. This comprised of 33 head teachers and deputy head teachers and 357 teachers selected from 110 schools within the district. Questionnaires, observation checklists and document analysis were used to collect data. Data collected was organised, coded and entered with the aid of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Data was analysed descriptively using frequencies, percentages, mean and standard deviations. The presentation of data is made through use of tables, pie charts and graphs. The study findings show that quality and retention challenges brought by the implementation of free primary education in Kakamega primary schools are still prevalent. Understaffing, overcrowded classrooms, inadequate syllabus coverage, inadequate classrooms, inadequate instructional materials and inadequate lesson preparations as some of the factors that impacted on quality of education in schools. The study recommends that head teachers, teachers, parents and government need to put measures that will address quality challenges in schools to ensure the realisation and sustainability of Universal Primary Education (UPE) and Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Abstract: This article identified whether the conflict resolution mechanism of the African Union helped in the management of the conflict in the Darfur region of Sudan between 2003 and 2009. The study contends that with the increase in intensity in the Darfur crisis, an Inter-Sudanese Peace Talks was arranged in Abuja-Nigeria in 2005, under the auspices of an African Union (AU) mediation team led by Salim Ahmed Salim and supported by the United Nation (UN), the United Kingdom (UK,) the United States (US) and other international partners. The Darfur Peace Agreement (DPA) was signed on 5th May, 2006, by the government and by Minni Minawi, the leader of one of the two SLM factions, but was rejected by Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) and Abdel Wahid al Nur, the leader of the other Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) faction. Thus, all the factions concerned with the crisis were not involved in the deliberations instead foreigners dominated the deliberations. The study revealed that such conflict management efforts that treat Darfur outside of its Sudanese context became counter-productive, thus, the conflict resolution mechanisms of the African Union failed in the management of the conflict in the Darfur region. The study suggested the need for a fundamental overhaul of AU's conflict management mechanisms thus, the AU should adopt the conventional process for conflict resolution with all the parties or factions participating in the process without any form of external imposition or interference and threat.

Abstract: Obstetric Fistula is a childbirth injury caused by prolonged obstructed labour leaving a woman incontinent of urine or faeces or both. The stigma associated with the condition keeps many women hidden away. A woman with obstetric fistula is too often rejected by her husband and pushed out of her village due to her foul smell. Without treatment, fistula often leads to social, physical, emotional and economic decline. Although some women with fistula display amazing courage and resilience, many others succumb to illness and despair. Kenya is estimated to have 1000-3000 new fistula cases every year where as the national treatment capacity is only 500 clients per year. With the understanding of the impact this condition has not only to the affected clients but also to the community at large, several local and international organizations are currently supporting the fistula repairs in Kenya. Review of relevant literature reveals inconsistent findings about the need for the post repair follow up for this client. This leaves program designers and their funding partners to handle the issue according to their discretion. Most projects focus on identifying fistula clients supporting them to get the surgery document the number repaired but do very little to follow up on this client. This paper gives the perspective on an outreach worker who has supported fistula clients for the last 11 years. The author looks at what is currently happening in Kenya and brings out the need for establishing post repair follow up in the programs. The paper gives case studies in the client either benefited from post repair follow up to show an amazing outcome or lost life in unclear circumstances. The paper demonstrates the effect of this follow up to the client their significant other, the community and the effectiveness of the project. It finally gives recommendation on how this can be integrated in fistula management.

Abstract: Multiculturalism is a prevailing phenomenon in many countries, including Greece. Today, schools are not characterized by homogeny in their population as they include pupils of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. The aim of this study is to examine in what degree and how the culturally and linguistically diverse pupils are presented in «The guide of pre educator teacher--Educational planning--Creative environments of learning», the Greek official curriculum for pre educator teachers, published by the Greek Ministry of Education in 2006, 10 years after the implementation of Law 2413/96 that was entitled «Greek Education Abroad, Intercultural Education and Other Provisions». This law is based on Intercultural Education which addresses issues related to multicultural classrooms. To analyze our material we used a quantitative content analysis, a descriptive and an interpretive. Results showed that, although there are enough references to culturally and linguistically diverse pupils, yet these are not in congruence with the aforementioned Law, but are more associated with the policy of integration, since the official language of instruction is Greek and only the superficial cultural elements of foreign pupils are accepted in the educational process.

Abstract: The Kenya certificate of pimary education (KCPE) is crucial since it is the indicator of a child’s basic education. The objectives of the study were to: determine the effects of enrolment of pupils on KCPE examinations performance, determine the effects of pupil to teacher ratio on KCPE examinations performance, find out the effects of pupil to textbook ratio on KCPE examinations performance, determine whether there is any significant improvement of KCPE in public primary schools of Kemera Division after the introduction of FPE using a chi square analysis and find out the effects of physical facilities on KCPE examinations performance in public primary schools. The literature was reviewed using the sub themes from the objectives. The study used stratified random sampling and descriptive design. The instruments used were questionnaires, interview schedules, focused group discussions and observations checklist. The total target population was 18 primary schools, 8326 pupils, 204 teachers 18 Head teachers, 180 school committee members and 2 education officers. The total population sampled was 372.The target groups from whom data was collected were pupils of class 4-8, teachers, Head teachers, school committee members and educational officers in the Division. The sample size constituted of 250 pupils, 80 teachers, 30 committee members, 10 Head teachers and 2 education officers in the Division .The study found out that enrolment was high, schools had uneven distribution of teachers, pupil to textbook ratio was inadequate and physical facilities were not enough. Chi square analysis showed no significant improvement in KCPE performance in the schools of the Division after the introduction of FPE. The study recommended that disbursement of funds to be sent in time to cater for high enrolment, Teacher to pupil ratio to be improved, Pupil to textbook ratio to be at 1:1, physical facilities to be improved and these would bring quality education and good KCPE results. The results obtained would be useful in informing policy on the improvement of the KCPE performance in the Division.

There has been tremendous growth in mobile banking penetration in many countries in the developed and
developing economies and most interestingly in a number of developing countries such as Nigeria. Yet there are numbers of opportunities and threats in the mobile banking systems. However the major threat of mobile banking is its non-adoption by the banking customers. This research focuses on the perceived barriers to mobile banking adoption in Nigeria as a developing economy. The study adopted an exploratory qualitative method and this was conducted among banking customers spread across three regions of North, West and East of Nigeria. The basis of participants’ selection was being active customers of the Nigerian banks. Findings indicate that there is intention to adopt the mobile banking services; unfortunately, the
intentions cannot be translated into action due mainly to lack of trust on issues such as the delivery
channels/technology, communication infrastructures, government policies, etc. Findings further revealed
that majority of respondents do not use internet and mobile banking services, due to several identified
barriers. There is however a preference for the traditional banking approaches as opposed to the mobile
banking services. The study recommends that banks and other financial institutions embark on massive
awareness campaign.

The results showed e-banking had a positive impact and that convenience, security and costs were the main factors influencing customer satisfaction. Abstract: Internet banking allows banks to provide information and offer services to their customers conveniently
using the internet technology. However, studies have shown that customers have perceptions that impact on the
uptake and continuous usage of the platform. The purpose of this study is to understand the effect of customer
perceptions on usage of internet banking in commercial banks in Kenya. This study used descriptive research
design while a stratified random sampling technique was used to select subjects to represent the target population
which was made up of 1,837,312 customers of commercial banks within Nairobi County. An estimated 384
respondents were targeted to participate in the study. 272 questionnaires representing a 71% response rate were
received and analysed. Based on the findings of the research it was concluded that customers perceptions have an
effect on usage of internet banking. Prior knowledge of technology was forund to have an impediment in using
internet banking by customers. Not all customers are well versed in using systems used in accessing internet
banking- both software and hard ware.

1. INTRODUCTION
The introduction of information technology (IT) has led to the fast growth and development in the service sector making it
one of the leading worldwide (Gonza´lez, Dentiste, & Rhonda, 2008). The most noticeable example is in the banking
industry, where through the introduction of IT related products in internet banking, electronic payments, security
investments and in addition information exchange (Berger, 2008), banks provide more diverse services to customers with
less manpower. The fruition of banking technology has largely been driven by changes in distribution channels as
evidenced by the introduction of e-channels such as automated teller machine (ATM), tele-banking, PC-banking and most
recently internet banking by commercial banks (Gallup Consulting, 2008). E-banking channels have experienced
phenomenal growth and have become the main avenues for banks to deliver their products and services (Amato- McCoy,
2009). Nyangosi & Arora (2009) noted that banking through electronic channels has gained much popularity in recent
years with majority of the banks having rolled out one or more of these to deliver their products and services to a wide
clientele. Significantly, the application of information and communication technology concepts, techniques, policies and
implementation strategies to banking services has become a subject of fundamental importance and concerns to all banks
and indeed a prerequisite for local and global competitiveness (Obasan, 2011). According to Munyoki & Ngigi (2011)
continuous technology development, particularly information technology revolution has forced the banks to embrace
internet banking channel as one of the strategies for their sustainable growth in an expanded competitive environment.
1.1 Internet banking:
Internet banking is defined as the systems that enable bank customers to get access to their accounts and general
information on bank products and services through the use of bank’s website, without the intervention or inconvenience of
sending letters, faxes, original signatures and telephone confirmations (Thulani, Tofara & Langton, 2009)

Banks decide to invest in Internet banking for many reasons; among these are: pressures to cut costs, increase information
richness for customers, pressures to produce more without increasing costs, improve the quality of services in order to
stay in business or to reach a wider audience. Banking is no longer limited to geographical regions, there is improved
efficiency and effectiveness of operations meaning that more transactions can be processed faster and most conveniently,
which will undoubtedly impact significantly on the overall performance of the banks (Padmalatha & Justin, 2011).
Olawepo (2012) further advanced that banks can benefit from much lower operating costs by offering internet banking
services, which require less staff and fewer physical branches.
To the customers, internet banking allows them to perform a wide range of banking transactions electronically via the
bank's website anytime and anywhere (Grabner-Kraeuter & Faullant, 2008). Nasri (2011) noted that with the help of the
internet, banking is no longer bound to time or geography therefore consumers all over the world have relatively easy
access to their accounts 24 hours per day, seven days a week. In addition Liao, Shao, Wang & Chen (2011) showed that
internet banking has the advantage in that customers avoid traveling to and from a bank branch hence, customers can
manage their banking affairs when they want, and they can enjoy more.
Customers gain convenience and flexibility of services (Liao et al., 2011). This is because these new services can easily
be accessed at any time from any locations with up-to-date information, efficient and effective response time, and use of
friendly interface technology (Ayo & Oni, 2010). Opening hours of banks are no longer a barrier to access banking
services in addition travel and waiting times are no longer necessary, and access to information regarding banking
services is now easily available (Ayo & Oni, 2010).
1.2 Commercial banking industry in Kenya:
In Kenya, commercial banks and mortgage finance institutions are licensed and regulated pursuant to the provisions of the
Banking Act and the Prudential Guidelines (CBK, 2013). Through various distribution channels which include branch
network, internet, mobile applications, point of sales and automated teller machines, banks ensure that money circulates
within the economy in a profitable and efficient manner (Muithya, 2013). There are 43 licensed Commercial banks and 1
Mortgage finance company (CBK, 2013), with an ownership structure of 30 locally owned and 14 foreign owned banks.
In addition, the locally owned financial institutions encompass 3 banks with significant shareholding by the Government
and State corporations, while 28 are privately owned (27 commercial banks and 1 mortgage finance institution)( CBK,
2013).
2. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Several studies have brought out a number of observations by researchers on what could have occasioned the low uptake
and continued use of internet banking; while Nyagosi et al. (2009) thought it’s because of other alternative banking
channels, others like Ozuru et al. (2010); Gikandi & Bloor (2010) and Isaiah (2011) observed that customers have
attitudes and perception that dissuade them from using internet banking.
In focusing on the commercial banks in Kenya, the current research will extrapolate further by using a more
representative sample that captures the banking industry in Kenya. It will aim at investigating the perceptions customers
have on internet banking by assimilating perception on prior knowledge of technology.
3. OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
The main objective of the study was to investigate the effect of customers’ perceptions on the usage of internet banking in
commercial banks in Kenya. The specific objectives were:-

4. LITERATURE REVIEW
Relevant literature to this research was reviewed from books, journals and websites
4.1 Theoretical review:
Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) has expansively been used by various studies to test how technology is being
accepted by consumers over the years. TAM which was developed originally by Davis in 1989 is used to explain how a

customer accepts or decline the use of a technology based upon perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness of a
technology (Aldás-Manzano, Lassala-Navarré, Ruiz-Mafé & Sanz-Blas, 2009).
The use of technology acceptance model elements in the current study will help in hypothesizing customers’ perceptions
on internet banking usage. If customers perceive internet banking as easy to use because it is secure, privacy is
guaranteed, cost effective, less complex and that they have prior knowledge of technology, they will most likely perceive
it as useful. Consumer demographics (such as age, gender, marital status, occupation and level of education) will help in
grouping customers for purpose of understanding perceptions for each group based on certain shared attributes. External
variables represent the intervening variables specifically other alternative banking channels which act as deterrents to use
of internet banking. These myriad of elements will in turn affect customers’ attitude, intention and actual use of internet
banking.
4.2 Empirical review and research gap:
Previous technological skill or prior computer experience can impact on consumers' beliefs and attitude on information
technology adoption (Vijayakumar & Chandra, 2013).
Nasri (2011) examined the factors that influenced customers to adopt internet banking services in Tunisia. From the study
internet banking usage was influenced by risk, convenience, security and also prior internet knowledge. On influence of
prior knowledge of technology Nasir (2011) looked at consumers’ prior experience with computers. He noted that
consumer's familiarity with technologies in general facilitated her appreciation of the potential added value which was
inherent in a technology.
Prior computer knowledge was associated with use of personal computers, the internet and e-mail. Thus he concluded that
prior knowledge of technology and attitudes towards computers influenced both attitudes towards internet banking and
actual behaviours. In addition demographic factors showed a significant impact on users of internet banking (especially
occupation and level of education).
Consumers have different levels of computers and internet competency which in turn could influence attitude, actual
behaviour and the frequency of using internet banking. This study does not clearly demonstrate how different competency
levels affect the frequency of using internet banking. Moreover, the study only looked at users’ knowledge on only
computers yet there are other equipment which can be used to access internet banking services
Akhlaq & Shah (2011) did an investigation to find out the factors that defy customer’s adoption of internet banking in
Pakistan. From the results the factors which had the highest impact hindering user acceptance and adoption of internet
banking was users’ familiarity with internet technology specifically software applications such internet browsers and also
concerns about download speeds. The use of hardware cannot be separated from software (applications) which helps in
manipulating and using software. Through hardware a user can perform various functions using application software’s to
perform specific tasks for example use mouse and keyboard to launch and operate internet banking website. It thus
follows that users of internet banking should have competence and prior knowledge in working with computers, an
element which this study did not look at.
5. METHODOLOGY
The study used descriptive research design to collect data from the respondents. Mugenda and Mugenda (2003) noted that
the purpose of descriptive research is to determine and report the way things are and it helps in establishing the current
status of the population under study. The target population for the study being customers in all the 43 commercial banks
operating in Kenya within Nairobi County. Essentially these are customers who have transactional and current accounts
that allow one to use internet banking services. Customers both users and non-user were included in the investigation. A
survey by Finaccess (2013) observed that there were a total of 1,837,312 customers who operated transactional and
current accounts cumulatively in all the 43 commercial banks-branches in Nairobi County: this formed the accessible
population for this study. Purposive sampling technique to pick a cluster of 12 out of the 43 commercial banks for this
study. A stratified random sampling technique was used to pick respondents. This was then followed by random selection
of subjects from each stratum (Orodho & Kombo, 2002). Mugenda and Mugenda (2003) recommend the use of 10% -
30% sample size of the population and thus the use of the selected number of banks met this threshold.

According to Mugenda & Mugenda (2003) a large population is one which comprises of 10,000 elements and more. In
this study the study population was made up of 1,837,312 customers and hence can be defined as a large population.
Using the Fishers formula below recommended by Mugenda & Mugenda (2003) the sample size for this study was
determined as follows:

The results were presented using frequency tables while inferential statistics were used to derive meaningful findings and
conclusions.

6. PRESENTATION AND ANALYSIS OF FINDINGS
6.1 Response rate:
Out of the 384 self-administered questionnaires 310 were returned. However, only 272 were duly completed. This
converts to a response rate of 71% as shown in the summary Table below

6.2 Demographic variables:
The majority of the respondents were male (56.2%). This indicated a male’s dominance in using banking services. This
agrees with results reported by Flavian et al (2006) that women were less likely to conduct their banking activities online.
Most of the respondents are young between 18- 30yrs and as such more in tune with banking technology. This view is
consistent with Alagheband (2006) who asserted that young individuals are more likely to adopt internet banking.
The result on marital status showed that the customer’s attitude towards internet banking adoption is higher for singles
(49.6%). A result that shows single people are more likely to adopt and use internet banking services than couples. It may
simply indicate a high likelihood for singles to use internet banking compared to married people.
The findings imply that education increases the likelihood of adopting internet banking services. Majority of the
respondents hold either a bachelors degree (30.1%) or other professional courses (26.1%). Thus highly educated
consumers may be more likely to adopt internet banking services than low educated consumers. This is consistent with
Karjaluoto et al (2002) who concluded that people with high educational attainment may have an aptitude for computers
and possesses good information processing skills. In addition Young (2006) showed that highly educated groups generally
accept changes more readily.
People who have a reliable source of income tend to have a high propensity to banking services. This is indicated in the
study finding showing that majority of the respondents have some form of employment (salaried – 59.6% and self-
employed – 30%). Analysis of the data showed that majority of the respondents at 58.1% operated a transactional account.
64.3% of respondents had registered for internet banking with majority having an account in only one bank. Frequency of
using internet banking is mostly on monthly basis and majority of the respondents have had access to internet banking for
more than three years.

6.3 Transaction services carried on internet banking:
Respondents were asked about the services they carry out on internet banking. From the responses obtained all those who
had used internet banking indicated that they use the service to check their account balance (100%) and account statement
enquiry (100%). 25.7% of the respondents indicated that they use internet banking to transfer funds compared to 74.3%
who said they don’t .Other internet banking services are rarely used for instance ordering cheque books (21.1%), stopping
cheque payments (23.4%), Email Enquiry (41.1%), knowing bank products (8.6%), bills payment (38.9%), prepaid
mobile top-up (30.3%) and management of direct debits and standing orders at 32.6% and changing internet banking
password (29.7%). This is shown in table 4. The results indicate an underutilization of the internet banking channel.
The use of internet banking as a channel for accessing banking services is only average (Muranguri, 2013). Podder (2005)
was of a similar opinion when he found out that the number of transactions carried out through the internet banking
channel remained low in developing and undeveloped countries. According to Podder there is still room for banks to
encourage uptake of the service by customers.

6.4 Frequencies and descriptive analysis on customer perception variables:
This section is analyzed based of the objectives of the study
6.4.1Prior knowledge of technology:
From the study, the results reveal that 16.2% and 31.6% have no or low capability respectively in using equipment used to
access internet banking, 23.5% fair, 12.1% good and only 16.5% are excellent. On using the internet; not capable 18.8%,
Low capability 30.9%, fair 24.3%, Good 13.6% and excellent 12.5%. The mean score for responses in this section was
2.755 which indicated that prior knowledge of technology had an effect on usage of internet banking in commercial banks
in Kenya.
The results show that the reason for low adoption and continuous usage of internet banking services among bank
customers is due to lower internet skills, lack of access, and lack of experience with related technologies such as
computers and smart phones. Consumers’ knowledge and skills about the internet and computers or smart phones are
important to the adoption of internet banking. If the knowledge and skills about the internet and computers or smart
phones is low, the adoption rate will be low.

The findings agrees with those of Karjaluoto et al. (2002) who asserted that prior experience and attitudes towards
computers and related technologies, influence both attitudes towards internet banking and actual behaviors. This is
because consumer's familiarity with technologies in general facilitates her appreciation of the potential added value which
is inherent in a technology.
In addition Corritore, Kracher and Wiedenbeck (2008) in their study noted that consumers may not rapidly adopt internet
banking due to a lack of understanding and knowledge about the internet. Internet experience is an important factor that
affects consumers’ intentions to use internet banking, and consumers’ attitudes towards using the internet banking system
(Lichtenstein and Williamson, 2009).

Table 11 displays the results of correlation test analysis between the dependent variable and the independent. The results
show that usage of internet banking is positively correlated with the independent variable used in the study. This reveals
that any positive change in security and privacy of internet banking will have an effect on internet banking usage.
7.1.2Regression analysis:
In order to establish the statistical significance of independent variables on the dependent variable, regression analysis
was employed. The regression model took the following form:

The findings in table 12 show that the coefficient of determination also called the R square is 79.3%. Coefficient of
determination explains the extent to which changes in the dependent variable can be explained by the changes in the
dependent variable. This means that the combined effect of the predictor variables (prior knowledge of technology)
explains 79.3% of the variation in effect of customer perception on the usage of internet banking in commercial banks in
Kenya. The correlation coefficient of 89.0% indicates that the combined effect of the predictor variables has a strong and
positive correlation with the dependent variable

Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was further carried out to test the significance of the regression model in relation to the
difference in means of the dependent and independent variables. The results on table 13 shows that prior knowledge of
technology was statistically significant in explaining the effects of customer’s perception on usage of internet banking in
commercial banks in Kenya. The findings produced an f-value of 75.942 which was significant at p<0.001. This illustrates
that the regression model is significant at 95% confidence level. Thus, confirming that there is a relationship between
customer perception and usage of internet banking. The value of F is large enough to conclude that the independent
variable as a whole was contributing to the variance in usage of internet banking.

Table 14 evaluates and interprets the standardized coefficients of correlation (beta). In estimating the contribution of each
independent variable in the study, it was established that all independent variables significantly contributed to the variance
of usage of internet banking in commercial banks in Kenya at 0.05. However, the relative importance of each independent
variable was different.

Since the significant values are less that 0.05, the coefficients are significant and therefore the regression equation
becomes:
Usage of internet banking in Commercial banks in Kenya = 1.671+0.103X4 + €
8. CONCLUSION
Based on the findings of the study it was concluded that customer perceptions have an effect on usage of internet banking
in commercial banks in Kenya. Prior knowledge of technology is an impediment in using internet banking by customers.
Customers seemed to have fair knowledge of gadgets used in accessing the internet for instance computers or smart
phones and only a few had adequate skills in using the internet application. The study results demonstrated a great effect
of other alternative banking channels and over the courter branch services to internet banking usage
9. RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE STUDY
To address the issue of unclear instructions, commercial banks can provide options for use of other languages so that
customers can easily understand if there is any problem in English language. This will make it easier for users to clearly
understand instructions. Banks can use various modes such as brochures, print media and other technologies to enlighten

users and potential users on step by step access and use of internet banking. This will help bridge the knowledge gap.
Electronic banking products such as internet banking should be made as user-friendly as possible as not many consumers
are familiar with the electronic banking.
10. SUGGESTIONS FOR FURTHER RESEARCH
The researcher focused on individual customers of commercial banks. Further studies can be done focusing on effect of
corporate customer’s perception on usage of internet banking in commercial banks in Kenya and also on strategies
employed by commercial banks to encourage adoption and continued use of internet banking by customers.
