Tunisia underwent a revolution in 2011 that led to the exile of President Ben Ali in January and the resignation of Prime Minister Mohammed Ghannouchi in February due to violent protests. While Ghannouchi promised elections by July, some Tunisians did not want him in power since he had worked with the ousted Ben Ali, though the military was able to maintain stability and allow political exiles to safely return.
