Women are underrepresented in climate leadership positions globally. Only 12% of heads of environment ministries and 38% of national delegations at the 2015 Paris Summit were women. This is due to traditional gender stereotypes that view women as caretakers and men as decision-makers, as well as lack of time for women to engage in leadership due to family responsibilities. Women leaders face attacks from climate deniers and those upholding masculine views of industry and capitalism. Greater representation of women is needed to broaden perspectives in addressing climate change.
