Great Place: Lakes & Dales
Competition Brief
416.01.2020
The Challenges
• Great Place: Lakes & Dales (GPLD), is one of 16 pilot
projects funded by Arts Council England (ACE) and
the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) that aims to enable
cultural and heritage organisations to make a step-
change, which will result in arts, culture and heritage
contributing to wider social and economic
objectives.
• GPLD is a partnership of Craven District Council
(lead authority), South Lakeland District Council,
Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority, and Lake
District National Park Authority, who have all
contributed additional funding alongside ACE and
HLF.
• The GPLD have identified that the area has 44%
fewer 16-34-year old’s than the national average,
which raises significant concerns regarding its
future economic and community resilience.
• A lack of accommodation suitable for younger
people in the GPLD area is evident and
investigations have highlighted a gap in provision,
which provides a mixture of affordable
residential accommodation and workspace.
516.01.2020
Competition Aspirations
• Competition divided up in to two sites
(Burneside & Horton)
• Develop innovative design ideas for the delivery of
flexible accommodation schemes, which will support
the retention and attraction of younger people
(aged 25-40) and businesses to the GPLD area.
• 40 new homes to Burneside site over approx. 1ha
• Aim for the mid-market purchase prices for the
Kendal area of £175k to £325k with a construction
cost aim of £120-135sq. ft
• Show sensitivity to context and local distinctiveness
• Seek to maximise the potential and opportunities of
the respective sites, whilst being mindful of the
constraints.
• Embrace sustainable and environmentally friendly
design principles
• Be capable of future adaptation in response to
changing demand and/or needs of occupiers
