Total assets using one or more socially responsible investing strategies reached $2.29 trillion as of 2005, up from $2.16 trillion in 2004. Socially screened mutual funds saw strong growth, with total assets of $179 billion in 2005, an 18.5% increase since 2003. Shareholder advocacy also increased, with more shareholder resolutions on issues like climate risk, political contributions disclosure, and sustainability reporting. Community investing expanded into new sectors and saw impressive growth in capital, reaching $19.6 billion total.

Microfinance for Water & Sanitation: Cambodian Case Study

A pilot program in Cambodia offered microloans, savings programs, and trade credit to households and small WASH businesses to increase the uptake of sanitation technologies. The program partnered local microfinance institutions (MFIs) that were interested in social missions and operating in the project's target areas. Initial challenges included high interest rates and lack of convenient savings collection. However, MFIs were open to technical assistance and saw benefits to their reputation and gaining new clients. An ongoing study will evaluate the impact of the financial products on WASH technology adoption over six months.
